I have wondered the same about these “left behind Americans.” I also know how the govt lies to us to manipulate our opinions, such as when they claimed the enemy was taking babies out of incubators and leaving them to die in Kuwait. I fell for it 30 years ago. Now...not so much.

Comes close in my reading to be dismissive of the value of translators to military units they were embedded with.
