Fact check: Study on breakthrough delta cases in Vietnam misrepresented online: Misleading article, written by Dr. Peter A. McCullough

CLAIM: A preprint paper by the prestigious Oxford University Clinical Research Group, published Aug. 10 in The Lancet, found vaccinated individuals carry 251 times the load of COVID-19 viruses in their nostrils compared to the unvaccinated.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The study is being misrepresented. It found vaccinated health care workers with breakthrough infections caused by the coronavirus delta variant had higher viral loads — the amount of virus detected in a person — compared to patients infected with earlier strains of the virus. Furthermore, other studies that compare the viral loads between vaccinated and unvaccinated delta patients found similar amounts of viral material in the two groups.

THE FACTS: The website, The Defender, which is published by the anti-vaccine organization, Children’s Health Defense, posted an article this week that distorts the findings of a recent study of breakthrough delta infections among vaccinated hospital staff in Vietnam.

The misleading article, written by Dr. Peter A. McCullough and posted online on Aug. 23, claims the study found vaccinated individuals carry “251 times the load of COVID-19 viruses in their nostrils compared to the unvaccinated,” and pose a “threat to unvaccinated patients, co-workers.” The article falsely blames the delta-driven surge in new COVID-19 cases on vaccinated people who are “acting as powerful Typhoid Mary-style super-spreaders of the infection.”

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is the founder and chairman of the board of Children’s Health Defense and has a history of posting vaccine misinformation, tweeted the article in a post that was shared 3,000 times.

But the article, and associated social media posts, distort the study’s findings, according to the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, which conducted the study in partnership with the Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

Thank you for posting such a lame, lying article as this. The article has within it the stuff that rebukes the newspaper:

“Viral loads of breakthrough Delta variant infection cases were 251 times higher than those of cases infected with old strains detected between March-April 2020,” the preprint paper reads.

While it is true that vaccines were not available at that time, the study was designed to compare how different strains of coronavirus impacted viral load, not vaccination status.

So, it is true that the viral load in Astra-Zeneca vaccinated people IS 251 times higher than that of the first first form of COVID-19, but since the study was not designed to show this, the AP and the authors want everyone to know ‘you really shouldn't draw such a conclusion, because we don't like you accidently finding out the truth.’

Absolutely BOGUS!

The “misrepresentation” may have been due to translation errors.

251x

I’d offer that the viral load of Delta has been reported as high as 1000x the viral load of Wild Wuhan in half the time

so 251x is 1/4 of what would be expected, and shows there’s good infection control within that hospital/group of HCWs

The phrase “Fact check” has become just like calling everything racist, far overplayed to push a leftist agenda.

This is all you need to read from the article:

The existing data, from multiple studies, in multiple continents, is that the amount of delta genetic material measured in the nose is similar between those who are unvaccinated and those who are infected despite vaccination,” O’Connor said.

When ever I see fact checkers not providing links, and telling me what to think, my reaction is to look up the original sources.

The Vietnamese study at SSRN: Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant Among Vaccinated Healthcare Workers, Vietnam

The Defender article about the study: Study: Fully Vaccinated Healthcare Workers Carry 251 Times Viral Load, Pose Threat to Unvaccinated Patients, Co-Workers

Not drawing conclusions, only providing source info.

It looks like, a highly vaccinated population, you are more likely to contract COVID from a vaccinated person than unvaccinated; and in spite of unsupported statement that viral load is cleared faster in vaccinated than in unvaccinated, this is is contrary to observation that a vaccinated person with “milder” symptoms, i.e. clinically not apparent, is more likely to wander about to more places than an unvaccinated person who is likely to isolate, willingly or unwillingly, due to being sick. So the superspreader on this data is not less likely to be the vaccinated person.

from the actual paper...

31 Findings: Between 11th–25th June 2021 (week 7–8 after dose 2), 69 healthcare workers
32 were tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. 62 participated in the clinical study. 49 were
33 (pre)symptomatic with one requiring oxygen supplementation. All recovered uneventfully.
34 23 complete-genome sequences were obtained. They all belonged to the Delta variant, and
35 were phylogenetically distinct from the contemporary Delta variant sequences obtained
36 from community transmission cases, suggestive of ongoing transmission between the
37 workers. Viral loads of breakthrough Delta variant infection cases were 251 times higher
38 than those of cases infected with old strains detected between March-April 2020.

So the so-called “fact checkers” label the assertion false, even when it’s the very thing asserted in the paper. The current vaccinated breakthrough cases in 2021 are showing viral loads 251X above those unvaccinated in 2020.

The AP is wrong and they contacted the authors to squeeze them into saying the same thing.

This is a sick story.

This article, and its comments simply goes to prove that people that have already made up their minds, won’t be mislead by facts.

Yep. My conclusion from reading the study is that there are now 69 Vietnamese study subjects (100% of those in the study) who are healthy and now carry robust natural immunity. That’s certainly not a bad thing.

Where are the citations which show that “it has been reported” as high as 1000x?

No need to read all the details. If the Ass Press says it’s false, it is true, and vice versa.
