Low-carb diet shown to improve cardiometabolic risk profile
Medical XPress / Children's Hospital Boston / The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ^ | Sept. 28, 2021 | Cara B Ebbeling et al

Low-carbohydrate diets are popular for weight loss and diabetes control. However, for most of the past 50 years, medical and public health experts have instead embraced low-fat diets, concerned about the health effects of saturated fats on cardiovascular risk factors like LDL cholesterol. As a result, low-fat and fat-free foods have proliferated—many of them high in processed carbohydrates.

A clinical trial led by Boston Children's Hospital, one of the largest and most rigorous study of its kind, now challenges that thinking. It demonstrates that low-carb diets—even though higher in saturated fat—produce better cardiovascular and metabolic profiles than low-fat, higher-carb diets.

…As compared with higher-carb, lower-fat diets, the low-carb diet improved the profiles of a range of blood lipids related to cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance. It also increased adiponectin, a hormone made by fat cells that promotes sensitivity to insulin and protects against atherosclerosis (the formation of fatty plaques in the arteries).

"We also found that the low-carb diet reduced lipoprotein(a), an under-appreciated risk factor for atherosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke that previously was not thought to be influenced by diet," says Ludwig.

Specifically, lipoprotein(a) fell by an average of nearly 15 percent with the low-carb diet, versus a 2 percent reduction with the moderate-carb diet and a slight increase of 0.2 percent with the high-carb diet.

In a related, recently published commentary, Ludwig, Ebbeling, and their colleagues specifically implicate refined carbohydrates—not excess calories—as fueling the obesity epidemic.

One trick that bodybuilders use, to keep the fat off, is that they eat minimize their carbs on their last meal.

That would be the logical inference, except why would it be that important to eat low carb for that?

The last meal of the day, they often keep carbs at a minimum so the body sugar that is in the blood will be used by the body before morning.

I’m on a low carb diet
About a month in & can already see positive results
Maybe it’s just water weight loss, cutting back on overall calories but have lost 8 pounds so far

Low-carb diet (20 percent carbs, 60 percent fat, 20 percent protein)

I’ve been logging my eating in Cronometer. Last week I ate 25% carbs, 58% fat, and 17% protein. I exercise a lot, and prefer more carbs than too much protein, which averaged 118g/day.

I would think eight pounds is more than water weight, but the weight you lose in the first three to four days is mostly water weight. The weight after that is hard fought weight loss.

Congratulations! A lot of issues we have caused within our bodies can be mostly undone by removing all but the lower glycemic foods. If we were active, we'd be fine with the normal cupcakes and breads in reasonable amounts, but high glycemic foods literally turn off our brain's ability to sense that we are full at the right stage. We have sabotaged some amount of truly good health we always could have had, but never knew.

Let's keep working toward that goal of a permanently healthy change.

By the way, there are ever more tasty keto items that do a great job substituting for the bad versions of cupcakes/ice cream/breads, etc.! The Birch Benders cup cake offerings taste great, but are almost too sweet now for me and my wife. At under 200 calories, the chocolate chip, blueberry, birthday cake, double chocolate brownie (my wife's favorite but the one I like the least) are great examples of tasty low carb food. The Rebel ice creams are amazingly good and rich (triple chocolate might be our favorite, but all are worth trying). For cakes, we've found the Swerve yellow cake mix is our favorite. The Fiber One (70 calories version) cinnamon coffee cake is worth trying. The list goes on, but if you need to address your sweet tooth, there is now plenty.

For keto breads, the Aldi keto breads are the best price point for the flavor, but the Sola (Costco/Walmart) and Orowheat (Kroger) breads are worth trying. For keto frozen meals, the Happi Foods eggplant lasagna and the Shepard's pie are amazing. There are also a half dozen tasty keto Healthy Choice options, but these also have double the carbs for the calories than the Happi meals, and are not as filling.

Interestingly, as we've lost weight, our sensitivity to what is sweet has changed and we find our bodies are pushing back on eating even these healthy sweets.

Give these items a try and tell me what you thought of them.
