California will outlaw the sale of new gas-powered lawnmowers, leaf blowers and chainsaws as early as 2024 under a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Saturday.
The law requires all newly sold small-motor equipment primarily used for landscaping to be zero-emissions — essentially to be battery operated or plug-in - by that target date or as soon as the California Air Resources Board determined it is feasible. New portable gas-powered generators also must be zero-emissions by 2028, which also could be delayed at the discretion of the state agency.
Machinery with so-called small off-road engines also includes chainsaws, weed trimmers and golf carts, all of which create as much smog-causing pollution in California as light-duty passenger cars, and reducing those emissions is pivotal to improving air quality and combating climate change, proponents of the law said.
"It's amazing how people react when they learn how much this equipment pollutes, and how much smog forming and climate changing emissions that small off-road engine equipment creates," said Assemblyman Marc Berman (D-Menlo Park), author of the legislation. "This is a pretty modest approach to trying to limit the massive amounts of pollution that this equipment emits, not to mention the health impact on the workers who are using it constantly."
Berman said the state has set aside $30 million to help professional landscapers and gardeners make the transition from gas-powered equipment to zero-emission equipment, however an industry representative said that's woefully inadequate for the estimated 50,000 small businesses that will be affected by the law.

Hmmmm ... so an electric generator must now be battery or plug-in powered?
Brilliant !!! Now, why didn't I think of that !?!?!!!
Weed trimmers? heh...
(I see what you did there .... :) )
They gonna buy everyone electric replacements?
“Wouldn’t it be easier just to ban gas?”
I see a thriving small engine-repair industry.
wait chainsaw? how do we trim our trees so they don’t start fires. with hand saws?
You just know their answer is push mowers, hand clippers and walking the course. Everything old is new again as Democrats take us back to the 1800s when they could openly own slaves. Plus we used to help people in other countries IN PLACE via aid and aid workers, then leftists discovered they could import low IQ foreigners and get them to vote for them by giving them stuff. I read an article over at DailySignal on that, “7 States Push Noncitizen Voting, 4 States Say No”, so give that a look. THIS is how countries fall, especially countries without a proper border. Visited California once, before it was a hellhole. Won’t ever go back.
Not that kind of weed.
Now why doesn’t that work? Seriously, knew someone who worked tech support for Dish Network back during Katrina and they said it was busier than hell with tons of folks not understanding that if the power was out then no their satellite TV would not work either.
That’s coming. California will be a true Luddite society before long.
This is getting to be more than insane!
Gruesome Newsom strikes again!
I cannot begin to imagine how terrible it must be for Americans who are trapped in California. What a total nightmare that state is becoming.
The golf courses are going to be great.
There’s a lot of professional landscapers who are going to go out of business and lots of grass that isn’t going to be cut.....
You get to keep your old equipment. They aren’t going door to door confiscating it. That will happen after they take all the gums.
I would suppose this would include all off road vehicles also, like dirt bikes and Quads. Another “City” idea forced on rural areas. Ranches, farms, and some industries are extremely dependent on these forms of practical transportation. Where are you going to charge up electric vehicles when in the middle of no where?
