Or you could phase shift the earth into another dimension so the asteroids just pass through. Cleaning up all the other dimensional animals wanting to feed on us when you do that might be a problem
Surround the earth with an electromagnetic shield. You want those before the aliens attack anyway.
Magnetize the moon. Let it sweep up any asteroids with metal in them. It's out there anyway, we might as well use it.
change the path just enough that it slingshots around earth and hits Mars. Mars needs more mass to help it retain an atmosphere. And if the asteroid has a lot of water ice, it's a win win.
Change the path just enough that it takes out whatever country is getting out of line at the moment. And I mean being aggressive towards their neighbors, threatening nuclear weapons or genocide. Not something petty like prescribing Ivermectin.

You missed the point. A cataclysmic “cosmic impact” ending life on earth will never happen. These fools just need taxpayer money.
