Steven Spielberg’s Woke ‘West Side Story’ Bombs with $10M Opening
Breitbart ^ | 12/11/2021 | John Nolte

Director Steven Spielberg’s woke West Side Story remake is a box office catastrophe expected to open in the $10 million range.

How awful is that? Well, do you remember that previous woke catastrophe, In the Heights? It opened to $11.5 million.

West Side Story is projected to bomb harder than In the Heights, lol.

Even so, the In the Heights’ production budget was only $55 million.

Why can’t Hollywood come up with anything that is new? Everything is a cheap copy of great works many decades old, or extensions of comic book franchises, also created many decades ago?

I don’t know why they have to dig up classics and put their contemporary improvements on them. Hey, let’s take some classic Christmas carols and play them in minor keys! Won’t that be amazing! No.

Think I’m gonna go watch “Duel”, starring Dennis Weaver, again. Still one of Spielberg’s best.

Has any of you FReepers seen this movie?

The original West Side Story had actors with darkened faces to represent the Puerto Ricans. This one actually has real Puerto Ricans.

That's not "woke." That's simply a more accurate presentation of the story.

This movie is brilliantly done. It is arguably the best movie remake since 1994's Miracle on 34th Street and will make a profit when overseas and streaming is countered in. The box office tally that is used now is obsolete.

When you’re a Jet, you’re a Jet all the way.

But this movie was not even half Jet.

There is also the “brain rot” phenomenon that is common with science fiction writers.

Their first novel (that gets them noticed) is usually excellent, sometimes even brilliant.

That is why they got noticed by anybody (out of hundreds if not thousands of new authors).

The second and third novel is where they are perfecting their craft—and those are usually great.

Then “brain rot” begins to set in after that. Publishers are demanding the writer meet deadlines so the author rushes so the works lack the “finish” of the earlier novels. In addition, much of the early passion is gone—it is just a money making enterprise. Low information readers go for the “name” and don’t understand the “game”.

The only science fiction writer who managed to actually get better as he got older was Philip K. Dick, but his books were so weird and ahead of his time that nobody was pressuring him to publish at all.

;-)

Hollywood is going to continue to ride the WOKE train, even though it derailed decades ago.

I walked out on the movie because of that, and it was right in the beginning. Yet for years have noticed no one else has even mentioned it till now. Thank you for saying so!

I haven’t watched a Spielberg movie since I read about his shooting and killing a T-Rex.

What really made the original “West Side Story” so eternal and compelling was its adherence to the true moral of it’s inspiration, “Romeo and Julliet”. The point of Shakespear’s play and Robert Wise’s film was that the honor disputes between the rival groups was a tragedy that destroyed the happiness of the young lovers. By trying to take sides for PC reasons, Spielburg steps on this important eternal message and destroys the real moral lesson of the story that makes it a classic.

You would think smart people like Spielburg would get this but they are blinded by their PC cult beliefs.

Given the “pandemic” games and (not) attending theaters and other public events, my bride and I have not been to a move theater in years. a magic word like “Spielberg” will not make these consumers run back and drop money on a remake. The original was just fine. The original sound track was the best.

Have you seen the advertisements for the remade “woke” Annie? Annie is black now. Another dumpster fire loser.

The remake of the classic western, The Magnificent Seven, is a prime example of a WOKE disaster.

The 1960 original was star-studded, and carried a very nice spiritual message.

The remake is a mindless, anti-capitalist screed.

and around the issues of racism and racial hostility.“

Race wasn’t the big thing these idiots try to play it as back then. It was in most case a superficiality that could be played up for a quick hurt. Maybe blacks could bitch but most hostility was just plain garden variety hostility. Neighborhoods mattered more. In places where everyone was one color there was constant “rumbles” with the other neighborhoods the other schools the jocks the greasers etc. I’m talking about the time the original movie was made. I can even tell you the year this kick ass thinking stopped like someone shutting a door: between 1974 and 1975. At least in my corner of the world.

I haven’t seen it and definitely won’t see it now that I know it’s “woke”. How did he ruin it vs. the original West Side Story?

Read the transcripts between Lucas and Spielberg about Raiders of the Lost Ark. Lucas wanted Marion to be 11 when Indiana had an affair with her. Spielberg thought 12 was the absolute youngest she should be and anything about 15 would make for bad drama.
