Steven Spielberg’s Woke ‘West Side Story’ Bombs with $10M Opening
Breitbart ^ | 12/11/2021 | John Nolte

Director Steven Spielberg’s woke West Side Story remake is a box office catastrophe expected to open in the $10 million range.

How awful is that? Well, do you remember that previous woke catastrophe, In the Heights? It opened to $11.5 million.

West Side Story is projected to bomb harder than In the Heights, lol.

Even so, the In the Heights’ production budget was only $55 million.

Honestly the fact that casting actual Puerto Ricans to play Puerto Rican is somehow “woke” just shows how dumb the whole situation has gotten.

“This one actually has real Puerto Ricans.”

The original had Rita Moreno who is Puerto Rican and George Chakiris who is of Greek ancestry (not a WASP in any case). Which Puerto Rican star who could pull big box office at the time the original movie was made should have been used in place of Natalie Wood as the other major Puerto Rican character? Were there enough Puerto Rican dancers and singers at the highest level of Broadway/Hollywood talent in existence to be cast when the original movie was made?

The new Maria has Colombian and Polish ancestry, so not Puerto Rican.

It isn’t enough just to be Puerto Rican. You have to have the chops to sing/dance/act at this level, and there is lots of competition.

Interesting that the remake if Magnificent Seven and the new Ben Hur have simply vanished into thin air. They are not even in the bargain bins at the stores.

You’re right. AND the wealthiest of them can buy islands for their families to live on. I’m OK with that for the most part - what I choke on is these same people standing with violent illegals and criminals. That’s evil. Just downright evil.

Is Spielberg a pedophile? Every powerful Hollywood player needs to prove they are not a pedophile.

"The original had Rita Moreno who is Puerto Rican..."

Rita Moreno was also in the Woke Remake Disaster, but in a different role, as a shopkeeper of the pharmacy.

I haven’t seen it. What was woke about it? I’m curious.

You nailed it Vet, Spielberg went woke and broke it. The occasional story I heard about it before it was released, convinced me to stick with the original version from my youth. Even with Natalie Wood lip synching her songs.

As a 12 year old watching the original version of Westside Story, I was really appalled by the rumble scene. I was expecting some real action and instead saw a bunch of guys dancing around with each other. An insult to all red blooded hoodlums.

How about a woke remake of Duel, where an evil supply-chain blocking semi truck driver chases a Chevy Bolt driver through the mountains?

Kind of like doing a remake of “Ben Hur”
WHY?

You opined: “Spielberg has been a disaster since he turned hard left.” I’m not disagreeing with you, but wonder when/which film you mark as the beginning of his left turn.

I’m asking because I’ve not seen many of his films since the last Indiana Jones film and “Saving Ryan’s Privates.” On the latter, the opening Omaha Beach portion I consider to be phenomenal. The re-editing of “E.T.” I consider a disaster.

Tony Kushner as Spielberg’s screenwriter is a factor. Kushner wrote “Munich” “Lincoln” and “West Side Story.”

Heaven’s Gate may be the worst movie ever be released!

No, Raul Julia’s Mac The Knife is by far worse than Heaven’s Gate, but I may be the only one who has ever watched it in a theater.

Mack the Knife is a 1989 romantic comedy musical film written and directed by Menahem Golan, a film adaptation of the 1928 Brecht/Weill musical The Threepenny Opera. The film stars Raúl Juliá as Captain Macheath, Richard Harris as Mr. Peachum, Julia Migenes as Jenny Diver, Julie Walters as Mrs. Peachum, and Roger Daltrey as the Street Singer.

It was so bad I walked out of the movie theater on opening night. I was the only person there and told the projectionist he could tur it off as I left.

The film has never been released on DVD.

You think that’s bad watch “At Long Last Love”, a musical from 1975 with Burt Reynolds in it.

This movie is brilliantly done.

The big issue I have heard is there are no sub-titles. Are you bilingual? Can someone who only speaks English follow the story, or do we just get half of it? I'm not likely to see it anyway. I haven't been in a theater since COVID shut them down, and I only went occasionally prior to that. Our theater in town is small and horrible. The nearest decent theater is an hour away. I've been meaning to go see the latest Bond, but it looks like I'm not going to make it.

What has Spielberg done since “Saving Private Ryan”?

I think sometime after that, the Hollywood parties and the Obama Administration got under his skin and he got “woke”, and is worse as time goes along. I can’t prove it at all, but look how bad his movies have been since “Saving Private Ryan”.

He has a few decent movies. Bridge of Spies is almost the exception. Ready Player One wasn’t terrible.

Since War of the Worlds and even before, most of his movies just haven’t been the same. “Hard Left” was putting it too harshly but you can see the wokiness working since around War of the Worlds. Maybe since AI.
