Nicolas Cage has revealed he once begged director Francis Ford Coppola to let him be in the Godfather trilogy.
The actor, who is Coppola’s nephew, was 25 when 1990 film The Godfather Part III was due to be shot, and told his uncle: “I really think I ought to be in your movie.”
Cage, speaking as part of The Hollywood Reporter’s actors roundtable alongside other Hollywood stars, revealed: “I said, ‘I really think I ought to be in your movie, Uncle. I really think it’s a good idea if you would cast me. I think I could play this part.’ He continued: “He was going to cast Andy Garcia, and I said, ‘But I just see myself more as James Caan’s son, and he’s playing Sonny’s son. He’s not playing Michael’s son. He’s Sonny’s son. I just feel a little more James Caan.’

I’m glad Nicky didn’t make the cut.
I like Cage, but I don’t think he would have been a good fit.
Still he could have placed him in there with such a large cast. Seems kinda mean.
Couldn’t have made part III any worse.
Cage is a fine actor. His choice in material is questionable at best. And missing out on The Godfather III is no loss. It was a dud.
Coppola probably didn’t want even more drama on the set than he already had. I can just imagine Cage and Pacino going at it with Caan egging it all on.
Maybe in part III, as an altar boy in the Vatican.
If there was a mobster with spikey hair from the valley in the script, Cage was a shoe in.
I only came in here looking for that “You Don’t Say” meme.
Disappointed.
“What was he going to play?

I don’t like this guy, he creeps me out.
Part III just doesn’t feel like it’s part of the same story.
Just more evidence of the nepotism that permeates hollywood and breeds the disgust they have for the fly over people who actually have to work for a living.
Coppola’s own daughter sucked...
Agreed. he could’ve stuck him in that stinker.
While I’ve seen Godfather I and II scores of times, I can barely remember Godfather III.
I only remember it being rather plodding, and a lot of people not liking it. Its certainly never on TV like the first two.
Watch him in "Raising Arizona." He's young, and its really funny.
Cage doesn’t look Italian. Sucks to be him.
