A culinary conundrum over two salads and a rice bowl has two restaurants at odds; ‘deconstructed Mexican salad symbolism’
Cafe Rio, a neighboring fast-casual Mexican chain, has argued in court filings that Chop Stop’s offerings violate a provision in its lease that no other restaurant in the same shopping center can make more than 10% of its sales from Mexican or Tex-Mex food. Chop Stop has said in response that its menu items are generic offerings that don’t belong in any culinary category.
For Ms. Sada, an assistant professor at the Culinary Institute of America, one potential consideration in the Viva Mexico Chop is the use of cheddar cheese. “We don’t even have cheddar cheese,” said Ms. Sada, who was born and raised in Mexico. “That’s not something you find in Mexican cuisine.” Simply having some Mexican ingredients in a dish also doesn’t make it Mexican, she added. “For me, it’s not just because somebody takes a jalapeño or a tortilla,” Ms. Sada said. “That’s just creating a dish using Mexican ingredients.”
...As for the case, “two pretty well-financed companies are fighting with each other over the impossible task of deciding what is Mexican food,” he said. “It’s a comedy of errors. I just wish it tasted better.”

If you want good Mexican food, you can learn to cook it yourself or ask where the cooks are from. A friend of mine opened a Mexican place in Old Town Alexandria VA back in the 90’s. He brought cooks up from San Antonio. Good stuff.
There is also a good book to use as a reference.
The title is “The Tex-Mex Cookbook”. It is a history in recipes and photos. It is my go to book. Author is Robb Walsh.
It reminds me of all those arguments food companies make so they can be judged by the more lenient USDA than the slightly more stringent FDA.
That’s why you aren’t a judge.
You’ve never had carnitas, carne asada, or albondigas?
I hate Mexican food. Hated it in Mexico, hate it here. Do NOT care who wins this stupid case. All losers as far as I’m concerned.
I also dislike pizza, beer, chocolate and football. My citizenship will soon be revoked. Perhaps they’ll sue me first and I’ll take it to the Supremes.
What are ya, a Communist?
And God only knows what ever the ‘’meat’’ is they put in it.
When my brother was discharged from the USMC he was stationed at Camp Pendelton. He took me and his wife to some ‘’great Mexican restaurant’’, he said “You’ll love it!’’.
Good Lord it was about the worst meal I ever ate.
Funny. My Indian (as in from the country of India) friend smelled me cooking Mexican food....took a look at the seasonings and proclaimed it Indian. She enjoyed it too.
Food changes everywhere in the world. The Japanese remove most of the heat (Japanify it). Funny story there. My FIL didn’t think the food in Japan tasted right as he ate at Japanese restaurants in Hawaii and it tasted different. My Japanese SIL hates sushi and most Japanese foods (which she changes with SPAM). The English created Tikka Masala. Even the continents upon which they originate have VASTLY DIFFERENT versions of the same food. Look at China!
Meh. I’m over it. Just want it to taste the way “I” like it. I don’t care whether it is “authentic” according to somebody else’s taste buds.
They should take the case to The Supremes.

Yeah. S’matter wit you pal? I bectha you don’t like cute little kids and puppy dogs too, huh?
Yeah, a Commie alright. Hidin’ in the wood pile!
Maybe. I do like wine and golf. Commies probably hate that elitist sport.
You don’t like spicy food? I don’t think Mexican is that spicy, but at least it has a little.
That statement alone is proof that they know nothing about Texas BBQ. We have many different styles of BBQ here.
Have you ever eaten food in England?
You have never had a taco? That’s like saying you’ve never had a hamburger, hard to believe. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t enjoy a good taco or hamburger from time to time.
—”The people who work there do not speak much English”
A gentleman that worked for me for many years was a serious foodie. He was Tex-Mex, fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, and French.
He enjoyed some very nice restaurants and would visit the kitchens.
Invariably the same report; the kitchen help was mostly Hispanic most of the time.
Sometimes I believe he was a bit disapointed.
mexican food is what people eat in mexico...
