this lack of COMSEC/TRANSEC could make it easy to feed false or misleading traffic into networks depending on these radios. This could pay tactical dividends for the Ukrainians, allowing them to sow disorganisation, doubt and demoralisation into Russian units......

It seems any report of russian incompetence and ineptitude, should not be dismissed, no matter how far-fetched it might sound.
One of my personal conspiracy theories is all the cheap ham radios they've produced over the years will be rendered inoperable by some tone/signal they send out prior to starting something. Hey, thanks for buying all those Baofengs. Zap.
If reports are true this operation seems poorly planned. You’d think that at the very least the Russians would have calculated their fuel requirements. It’s not like they don’t have oil in Russia.

If the Russians are indeed using unencrypted HF comms, I wonder if you understood Russian, could you use one of the many SDRs on the web all over the world, tune and see if you could find Russian military comms.

So there is not much difference between Russia’s radio modernization efforts than those in the US. Our most reliable system is SINCGARS first deployed in 1980s. We’ve relied on commercial entities like Harris and Thales to provide interim solutions along the way because the office programs of record have foundered.
