I'm guessing it was an instinctive defensive reaction against a potential threat to the deer or its fawn:

"Various birds of prey actively hunt down deer for food, although it isn’t a very common sight.

"Fawns are the most common type of deer taken down and eaten by birds of prey as they’re much smaller and defenseless.

"However, large deer can also fall victim to hawks and eagles. A well-placed ambush can take down an adult deer, but it’s more likely to be successful if the deer is sick."

Yay! to the deer, & PTL for sending a rescuer! We’ve been rabbit lovers and had several of them for pets. This is an awesome story!

Lord, please protect the life of this deer. It is a real hero to this little rabbit’s family!

Simple explanation. Deer occasionally eat birds.

Yeah that's what it looked like....it even ran off another deer who tried to horn in on the treat...

Deer was eating the hawk. They’re not vegetarians you know.

I’m guessing from your home page, your from Atlanta, but maybe originally NYC or Toronto.

Did you know that there are ducks with four legs? I’ve seen one playing Pictionary with my then fiancé, who was from Toronto.

City girls.

Maybe in NYC when they find that pigeons are more abundant than grass.

Or maybe you are being sarcastic. See post 48

Rabbits cries clearly triggered maternal instinct to kick in..

Mama deer may have had her fawn hidden a few feet away and acted to protect it.

OMG, are you a Democrat, that unfamiliar with wildlife. I’m not even going to entertain you with links, because you’re obviously just beyond reach.

Heck, even the video posted shows the deer protecting his kill from another deer and eating the friggin’ hawk. Un-freakin’-believable.

Bless your heart ❤️

When encountering a deer, I’d much rather be a bird than an apple, just as when encountering a cat I’d much rather be a nerf bullet than a mouse (I do have a cat that just loves eating nerf bullets, but that hardly merits a generalization).

Yes, deer on rare occasions do eat conveniently located immobilized small birds—something that has become evident through the use of motion sensor photography.

If the deer were truly after the bird for food, the person who found it would have noted that it was partly eaten—that’s the first clue that there was probably some other motivation.

The bless your heart does mark you as from the right side of the Mason Dixon line.

Deer and elk do eat birds eggs and birds now and then. Maybe this one was mad because it wanted to eat the rabbit. Deer eat squirrels and dead people (seen on trail cam) too.

To be honest, the ferocity of the attack led me to believe that the deer had personal issues.

Deer can be very vicious.

A few weeks ago, I hit one with my car. It must have been a glancing blow because when I pulled over, the deer proceeded to attack my car in much the same manner as this video, forcing me to drive away from the scene. It's a good thing I did not get out of my car or I would have been mauled myself.

Struck deer attacking motorists is actually quite common. When you hit a deer, unless you killed it, do not get out of the car under any circumstances.

Thank you for your words of caution. Deer-vehicle collisions are very common here.

There was a clip on Youtube about a man who was forced to break the deer's neck because it wouldn't stop attacking him. Very intimidating.
