...a large variety of food could be produced in the dark using their method, including green algae, yeast, and fungal mycelium...

Yum!

Kinda reminds me of the government and media.

"The researchers...used a two-step electrocatalytic process to convert carbon dioxide, electricity, and water into acetate, which is the main component in vinegar. They then applied the acetate to food-producing organisms in the dark, causing these organisms to grow."

Sounds like a scientific version of a Rube Goldberg contraption, i.e., making something complicated that is really quite simple. I'll continue to prefer the old-fashioned method of using sunlight to grow things.

they can combine their method with solar panels to generate the electricity required to power the electrolysis.

Using sunlight to grow food withou sunlight.

is the end product exactly the same in every aspect...nutrition, calories, minerals...I have to believe the sun gives more than heat and light to plants.

If Yellowstone were to erupt the survivors will need to utilize this method for about 6 years afterward.

You’ll be eating green algae, yeast, and fungal mycelium and you’ll be happy.

Electricity? So the plants are now coal powered instead of solar powered.

Sounds great ... but what is the economy of scale here. Is this an interesting laboratory experiment. Let’s envision this for feeding 1-10 million people. A million acres of wheat, corn, potatoes, etc.
