A physician and preparedness advocate discusses ways to decrease your chances of becoming a victim.
On July 4, 2022, parade spectators in Highland Park, Illinois were exposed to an active shooter. This time, it was a 120-pound, 22-year-old man who calls himself "Awake the rapper." Dressed in women's clothing, he fired more than 70 rounds into the crowd from a nearby rooftop. When the perpetrator was done, 7 were dead and 38 injured. The event caused a dozen nearby municipalities to cancel fireworks displays due to the tragedy and concerns about further shootings.
Is there a way to increase the level of safety when attending concerts, parades, and other events? As a medical preparedness advocate, I've written a lot about situational awareness: a calm vigilance that allows citizens to identify "anomalies" that may signal imminent violence. That mindset will serve you well in these troubled times.

1. Always remain in a state of "Yellow Alert." Yellow alert simply means staying calm and being aware of your surroundings and the people around you. When people are behaving strangely, take note, move away, and avoid them.
2. Always mentally map out routes of escape in your vicinity. Where's the nearest side street? Is there a building or subway entrance that will get you out of harm's way? If you don't know the immediate area, go to where you know the lay of the land.
3. If you have to make your way through or remain in a crowd, stay on the fringes. The best seats at a concert may be in the center, but they also give you the least mobility. If something happens, you'll be caught in the midst of masses of people surging away from the violence. If you are, the crowd is deciding your movements, not you.

Unless you are in a crowd, get out of the line of fire immediately, which means dropping to the ground. Then roll/crawl to cover, preferably under a car. You are hosed in a crowd as you’ll probably be stomped if you drop to the ground. Try to get next to a vehicle in that case, then drop to the ground and crawl under the vehicle.
Sad when we have to live our lives in a constant state of yellow alert. I grew up with no alert level being necessary.
This, for starters: once proven as the perpetrator of the slaughter, First Thing: Cut offf both trigger fingers of the criminal. Second: Death Penalty via the consensus of the families of the victims. Third: Arrest the parents and/or guardians of the murderer. They go to Prison, 10 years for every fatality; 4 years for wounded. Automatically. Too severe you say? Tell that to the grieving mothers and fathers and children. If the parents of these killers knew that they would go to prison, maybe they’d give a damn about it. I’m not a betting man, but if I was I’d bet this little degenerate’s parents are thinking about one thing: Themselves.

So if in a crowd drop immediately to get stomped?

I did too. Dad and Grandpa both had rifles in display racks. Grandpa also carried a 1911 45 under the seat in the car. I knew where all these were. Yet I never went mass shooter.

Solid point. Just punishment applied without undue delay (days or weeks; not months or years) is an absolutely necessary, if not the primary, way to address this.
Just show the shooter the “Guns Not Allowed” sign... that’ll stop him right in his tracks!
My father and grandfather were both hunters as well. I grew up around rifles and shotguns. But neither my father or grandfather felt the need to carry a gun around with them. I have a 9mm Ruger for self defense but I live in a rural area where police response time can be ten or twenty or thirty minutes and not in suburban KC.
For starters, God has been taken out of our schools.
In other words shut up and let the godless, America hating left be the only ones speaking. Nope.

One simple easy rule……..

Hang out next to a fat guy or two.
Mass murderers are in their own class. We should make examples of them. If guilty with no doubt, tar and feather them....whatever, I’ve no issue with it - maybe if some of these morons had a little fear in them they’d think twice.
