Charleston, W.Va. — Police say a woman's actions may have prevented a mass casualty event following an altercation about a man speeding through a neighborhood.
"She did the right thing. I don't know if any other person would have done that," said Lt. Tony Hazelett with the Charleston Police Department.
Charleston police said it all started when 37-year-old Dennis Butler was speeding up and down a parking lot inside the Vista View apartments.
He was approached by people attending a graduation party and a birthday party, who asked him to slow down, as children were playing.
Witnesses said Butler seemed agitated and left but returned to the complex shortly after, armed with an AR-15 style rifle, and started shooting at the crowd.
Police said a woman pulled out her pistol, shooting and killing him.
"This lady was carrying a lawful firearm," Hazelett said. "A law abiding citizen who stopped the threat of probably 20 or 30 people getting killed. She engaged the threat and stopped it. She didn't run from the threat, she engaged it. Preventing a mass casualty event here in Charleston."
Police said Butler has an extensive criminal history.
In 2016, he was accused of shooting and pistol whipping a 19-year-old woman, but those charges were dismissed because no witnesses testified at a pretrial hearing.
Court records showed Butler had been convicted of two felonies in the past, so he should have not had a gun.
Speaking about the woman, Hazelett said, "She's just a member of the community who was carrying her firearm lawfully, and instead of running from the threat, she engaged with the threat and saved several lives last night."

Its becoming a good habit.
Good guys (gals) with guns save lives
Dear WRAL,
This is not helpful.
Regards,
CNN
The slew of AR-15 and like rifles used in these shootings make me suspect some kind of a campaign leading up to demand for a ban.
But maybe I’m paranoid, too.
A lady with more guts than the Uvalde cops. Good for her!
She has more balls than 367 people with badges in Uvalde.
Note that this is from the end of May, not a current event like the mall in the Indy suburb, and the St. Charles event. Good reminder, though.
Obviously a few more of these incidents of good people with a gun need to happen so that nut case bad guys with guns will see that maybe their dreams of killing lot of innocents will be stopped in their tracks.
That said, be very wise and make sure you realize the extent of what is happening before you so that you make no mistake and end up dead or in prison.
May 30th
Haha, Snopes found that CNN, NBC, and ABC did not cover the shooting.
This is the first time I’ve heard of it, and it happened in May.

Butler reportedly stole the rifle, so no amount of ‘gun control’ laws would have made a difference.
And I was wondering if yet another woman had saved lives in WV.
Nope, it’s just a re-play of the old news.
The anti-gunners hate it when that happens.
Yes, and there have been plenty this year.
Heck, even the bold Vietnamese who subdued the Chinese shooter in CA, while the Buffalo incident happened. The latter of course got all the hype, esp. with “racism” being able to cry, but at least the CA church event got some mention, even though shooter was not shot but - shock - held by hand!
We need to keep track of these thwarted mass casualty incidents.
Search here and you’ll find it, timely back then.
“SLOW DOWN!”
“bang, bang, bang”
The things people go berserk over. What is wrong with people?

From that I conclude that gun laws simply don’t work.
But I must be wrong because the left says we need even more gun laws.
