America Was in an Early-Death Crisis Long Before COVID
The Atlantic ^ | 21 Jul, 2022 | Ed Yong

Posted on 07/23/2022 8:23:58 PM PDT by anthropocene_x

From the 1980's onwards, the U.S. mortality rate started falling behind its peers. By 2019, the number of missing Americans had grown to 626,000. After COVID arrived, that statistic ballooned even further—to 992,000 in 2020, and to 1.1 million in 2021. Were the U.S. just average compared to other wealthy countries, not even the best performer, fully a third of all deaths last year would have been prevented. That includes half of all deaths among working-age adults. Think of two people you might know under 65 who died last year: One of them might still be alive.

These counterfactuals puncture two pandemic myths, that the U.S. was just one unremarkable victim of a crisis that spared no nation, and that COVID disrupted a status quo that was strong and worth restoring wholesale.

America’s life expectancy has tailed behind other comparable countries since the 1970s. By 2010, that gap was already 1.9 years. By the end of 2021, it had grown to 5.3. And although many countries took a longevity hit because of COVID, America was once again exceptional: Among its peers, it experienced the largest life-expectancy decline in 2020 and, unlike its peers, continued declining in 2021. People often misinterpret life-expectancy declines, as if they simply represent a few years shaved off the end of life. Someone might reasonably ask: What’s the big deal if I die at 76 versus 78? But in fact, life expectancy is falling behind other wealthy nations because a lot of Americans are dying very young—in their 40s and 50s.

The U.S. actually does well at keeping people alive once they’re really old, but it struggles to get its citizens to that point. They might die because of car accidents, heart disease and other metabolic disorders, or drug overdoses, suicides, and other deaths of despair.

Since the 1970s the US has had an ever present and debilitating drug problem. How many of those excess deaths were caused by overdose?

Half the country is morbidly obese, I assume that has something to do with it.

Is it possible that white Americans and black Americans may be genetically inferior compared to their European and African counterparts respectively? They seem to have a proclivity for exceptionally bad habits (drugs, crime) and in much poor health (notice all the obesity, which you don’t see in Europe and Africa).

Fentanyl is smuggled into USA by Billions of dollars worth.
Mostly all young users. Fentanyl is more potent than heroin by orders of magnitude. Very easy to overdose which can be fatal.

This is a problem but the authors are proponents and perpetuating the death spiral.

Opioids ?

Fentanyl ?

Those make no point in such an analysis

They condone opening the border for a narco war against Americans that has killed hundreds of thousands.

Health care?

Y’all got the biggest lefty adjustment toward universal health care in 2013 with Obamacare. But that decreased life expectancy. That is the idea. They wanted that.

Because who didn’t notice all the bodies of “sudden death” people just piling up in the streets, before the Coof?

I remember reading years ago that we have higher infant mortality than other wealthy countries since we count the deaths differently. If that is true, that could be part of the reason for disparity before covid.

We do classify infant deaths differently and we try to save many more premature infants than other countries do. Those are then classified as an infant death whereas in other countries they make no effort and classify them as miscarriages

What you are seeing is the effects of a despotic establishment warring against its own citizens, not some supposed genetic deficiency. You should hang your head in shame.

“What you are seeing is the effects of a despotic establishment warring against its own citizens”

This is correct. And discovering that is hard because we’re also conditioned to “fight to win” against something like a sports team with different helmets, and that’s not how the despotic elite and demons work.

Most of the excess deaths appear to be due to things Americans choose to do.

Like taking drugs, driving drunk, eating to obesity, not exercising, going to dangerous places at dangerous times and getting shot, etc.

People chose to get shot? Help me out with understanding that process.

A few things......

This is not a comparison of like for like. ie what is the average life expectancy of Danish Americans vs Danes, German Americans vs Germans, Japanese Americans vs Japanese, etc. The point being the US is the only wealthy country that has a substantial Black population and they are more prone to heart disease. Japanese by way of contrast have inherited some good genes which make them less prone to heart disease and thus they have longer lifespans on average.

Next, the US counts infant mortality differently than European countries do. In European countries if the baby is under a certain weight, they do not count as a live birth. In the US they do count. Underweight babies are significantly more likely to die. Again Blacks are more prone to having underweight babies.

The other factor is that America has a worse obesity/overweight epidemic. Though European countries are catching up quickly, the problem is worse in the US. That means more heart disease, cancer, etc

Finally, America has a raging fentanyl epidemic that the Biden administration is doing nothing about because that would require closing the border which it is unwilling to do. We had over 100,000 deaths due to drug overdoses last year. That is a staggering number and these are mostly younger people.

None of this says anything about the healthcare system by the way though Leftists will of course try to claim socialized medicine would somehow fix everything (newsflash! it won’t).

“Excess deaths” compared to the rate before the shots. People were doing all that before and since, it hasn’t changed but the death rate has.

“People chose to get shot? Help me out with understanding that process.”

The Chicago Trib published a list of all the shootings over a weekend.

If you weren’t out between 9 pm and 6 am, or you weren’t in a number of fairly small neighborhoods, your chances of getting shot were minimal.
