Alarming Study Finds Most Bottled Water Is Full of Microplastics

That plastic bottle of water? Apparently it’s full of plastic. According to the organization Agir pour l’Environment (Acting for the Environment), 78% of bottled water from the best-selling brands in France is contaminated with microplastics.

A new study suggests most plastic water bottles in France are full of microplastics, which might have a detrimental effect on the environment and your health

“Every week, we ingest an average of 5 grams, the equivalent of a credit card,” the NGO notes in its latest report. These microplastics then contaminate the water cycle, soil, food chain and even our own bodies. Microplastics are tiny, virtually invisible fragments of plastic between 0.0001 and 5 millimeters. Researchers found that “changes in the gastrointestinal tract from plastic are linked to metabolic diseases like obesity, diabetes and chronic liver disease.”

If you are drinking something with 5 millimeter pieces of plastic in it, you will definitely know it!

Yeah... it seems that would be more of a milliplastic than a microplastic.

I suspect they’re not talking about fragments that large being in the water bottles but fragments closer to the 0.0001 mm range that you would never notice.

“Every week, we ingest an average of 5 grams, the equivalent of a credit card,”

This defies reason. That means every day you would consume 14% of a credit card. I think you’d have to see that much plastic.

Bottled water is the most abused food product.

Every other product; manufactures, shippers and retailers do everything to limit exposure to sunlight and heat.

Cases of bottled water sit outside, next to store windows and hot warehouses. Purchasers leave them outside, hot cars and beds of trucks in direct sunlight.

Even your tap water, exposure to sunlight is kept to zero until it comes out of the faucet (*not Dr Faucet).

"A recent study by OrbMedia analyzed 159 water samples, sourced from both tap water and bottled water in 14 countries, and found that over 80% of all samples contained tiny plastic particles, with an average of 4.34 plastic particles per liter of water. Even more surprising, 94% of water samples from the United States contained microplastics, which topped the list."

Criticism of author. 5mm is not invisible. 1mm is not invisible. You can feel a 1mm item in your mouth.
