Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday amid warnings from a furious Beijing that any U.S. politician visiting the island nation will 'come to no good end' if they 'play with fire.'
Her Air Force plane - with its distinctive blue and white colors and American flag on the tail - touched down in Taipei at 10:45 pm local time.
The Chinese, meanwhile, backed up their words with a shore of force.
As the speaker's Air Force C40 approached Taipei, Chinese Air Force Su-35 fighter jets were crossing the Taiwan Straits, local media outlets reported.
And chilling footage shared on Chinese social network Weibo appears to show amphibious tanks on the coast of Fujian along the Taiwan Strait. Further footage shows military equipment on the move in the city of Xiamen.
But Taiwan gave Pelosi a warm welcome. The island's tallest building, TAIPEI 101, lit up with a welcome message for Speaker Pelosi and supporters held welcome signs out of the hotel she will reportedly stay in.
Pelosi is the highest-ranking U.S. elected official to visit Taiwan since 1997. The White House is aware of her location.
'The speaker's flying aboard a military aircraft so we'll know,' spokesman John Kirby said at Monday's press briefing when asked how the White House would know if Pelosi touched down in Taiwain.
The speaker's Air Force jet left the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday morning, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24. The site later crashed after 300,000 people tried to chart Pelosi's journey.
Beijing earlier warned that the United States will 'pay the price' if Pelosi visits Taiwan while Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that those U.S. politicians who 'play with fire' on the Taiwan issue will 'come to no good end'.

What we do know is this: Pelosi gave legitimacy to the democratically elected government of Taiwan. That's why China is so upset: they don't see the elected government or its officials as being legitimate. They damn' sure don't recognize Taiwan's independence.

Worse still, I think the young ones want to discard our society in exchange for communism. We are guilty of not keeping our fingers on the pulse of the schools. For any hope of getting ourselves out of this rot spiral, the real work MUST be at the STATE and LOCAL level. People can no longer believe that they must fight this at the national level and expect positive results. That ship sailed many decades ago.
That's not to say ... ignore federal politics. It's to say, we need to refocus and quadruple our efforts on the politicians who are closest to us. It should be painfully obvious now that a local school board election is actually nothing to ignore.
I think the younger generations, who succumbed to the indoctrination in the schools, want to live in a communist utopia. We no longer influence the outcome.
