The Countess of Wessex was pictured comforting Princess Anne today as members of the royal family watched Queen Elizabeth II's coffin arrive in Edinburgh to lie in rest at the Palace of Holyroodhouse overnight.
Sophie, 57, the wife of the Queen's youngest son Prince Edward, 58, was seen placing her hand on the Princess Royal's back in a supportive gesture after the coffin made the journey from Balmoral to the Scottish city.
The Queen's children and their spouses - Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, Duke of York and the Earl and Countess of Wessex - watched as soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland carried the coffin into the Palace.
In a touching moment, deference to the monarch was still observed, with the royal women curtseying and the men bowing their heads.
Her Majesty did not travel alone during her 180-mile journey, Anne and her husband were in a limousine as part of a procession directly behind her.
The Queen will stay at the palace overnight before being moved to St Giles' Cathedral tomorrow afternoon - where earlier a large crowd had gathered to witness the midday proclamation of King Charles as head of state.
Yesterday, both Princess Anne and Sophie appeared teary-eyed as they looked at floral tributes to the Queen left at Balmoral, alongside other members of the royal family.
Meanwhile, Scottish mourners paid tribute to Her Majesty by lining the route of her coffin procession in their thousands as she left Balmoral for the last time.
Silent, sombre and respectful, well-wishers gathered beside country roads, bridges and in village and city centres to say goodbye to the woman who was never more at home than when in Scotland.

Anne & Charles look pretty ‘rough’, showing their age & haggard with grief. Evidently, they were the only two with their mother when she died ... the rest arrived after she’d passed. The death of the Queen is an “unmooring” ... the last parent to die for her children and the only person in the Queen/King’s role during the lives of most of the people in the country. Regardless of what anyone thinks of the Queen (for, against, indifferent), security/stability of a certain kind died with her.
Truly the end of an era. I'm skeptical about Charles but maybe he will surprise. I'm just a mildly interested observer, ultimately it's up to the British and the citizens of The Commonwealth.
I have no faith in Charles at all. In fact I knew Elizabeth would sit on the thrown until she died because she knew Charles was lame.
If I was Elizabeth I would have bypassed Charles and sent the crown either to Anne or William.
Of course - she was the unofficial leader of the English-speaking world. The last link to the greatness of Empire and WWII victory.
So true.
God rest her soul.

…It therefore came to be established not only that the Sovereign rules through Parliament, but that the succession to the throne can be regulated by Parliament, and that a Sovereign can be deprived of his/her title through misgovernment.
The Act of Settlement confirmed that it was for Parliament to determine the title to the throne…
There is a FR member, an Australian who is a friend of Charles. Went to school with him & served in the military with him. He had a different view of Charles. He says Charles has been completely misrepresented by both the UK and our media. A lying media is not a strange concept to us. The only thing we have close to be right about him is his starry-eyed view of environmentalism. Since he’s the only one here with any direct evidence of what Charles is like. I for now will go with his view until I get some evidence unfiltered by both medias. I admit this isn’t likely. Anyway, he’s a constitutional monarch with little to no real power. He’s a national symbol the equivalent of a human flag.
It’s their country, not mine. I’m not going to lose sleep over it.
Leaving aside her influence on the UK and the Commonwealth, what little she was allowed considering the strict boundaries within which she was allowed to operate, most of the world looked to her her as an an example of graciousness and good manners, whether consciously or subconsciously measuring their own against hers.
Amid the regrettable coarsening of language in current society, the scoffing at etiquette and good manners, most of us instinctively know that graciousness and good manners constitute the oil that lubricates the everyday frictions we unadvoidently daily encounter in our interactions with others.

We could use some of that here on FR.
Amen, Reily, Amen. Some seem to have taken advantage of JimRob’s illness and absence and shamefully act up and act out. Disrespectful to him and disgraceful. It’s up to the rest of us to carry on and keep fine FR traditions and observe our time-honored courtesies as best we can. Not that it’s easy lately ...

I will buy that answer. I’d love to talk to this freeper about that nonsense going on with Megan and Harry and know the real story. If I had been Elizabeth I would have put my Royal foot down and kept Harry far from her.
Amen! I really liked the Queen. I was raised that there are such a thing as manners that you follow. And just plain courtesy! That’s the one thing missing in todays society. Even customer service has become a lost art in a lot of instances. It’s a shame really.
I just realized I misspelled throne. Damn auto correct.
I have no idea about the heading all I know is there are a lot of names dropped all over.
Well, he is in Australia not the UK. So how much he is up on Harry & Megan is probably not that much better than what we know. Also, he’ll defend the Charles he knows but he’s not going to tell tales out of school or gossip. If I remember this right, he hadn’t physically seen Charles in years. They do on occasion correspond. Probably like myself and old college chums exchange Christmas Cards and the odd email. In many respects he’s very ‘Old School’ - adheres to ‘gentlemen do not gossip about their friends’. He’ll sometimes join in on Charles discussions. It’s usually best to read his comments and decide on your own whether you believe his comments or not. Sometimes he’ll answer you directly if you have a question.
Personally, I think its lost here and not coming back. I blame a certain cult for that. Every so often I toy with just throwing my hands up and dropping my affiliation here.
And I admit I sometimes contribute to the rancor!
I rather doubt that he’s the sort to ‘dish dirt’ on the family; especially now.
I get where you are coming from ;
You and me both, brother (or sister, as the case may be). You and me both. (sigh)
Others have thrown up their hands and left already. Although I am fast losing hope, I do still pray sanity and civility prevail in the end.
All the best to you and yours, and may the Peace of the Lord be your comfort and strength.
