I can see how you could cheat playing online, but how do you cheat in a real tournament?

“I can see how you could cheat playing online, but how do you cheat in a real tournament?”

Hidden devices, visible cues from “assistants”.

Petrosian complained to the officials. After Nigalidze left the bathroom once more, officials inspected the interior and say they found an iPhone wrapped in toilet paper and hidden behind the toilet.

“When confronted, Nigalidze denied he owned the device,” according to the tournament’s Web site. “But officials opened the smart device and found it was logged into a social networking site under Nigalidze’s account. They also found his game being analyzed in one of the chess applications.”

How do they signal him? I assume that the officials and audience at chess match aren’t idiots.

BREAKING: Magnus Carlsen Will Not Play Today | Round 4 (St Louis Chess Club)

Additional comments from when Magnus quit the tournament.

His tweet had the (probably) intended effect of dumping on Neimann, and the YT'ers around the world, especially GM Hikaru, tried and convicted him of cheating.

In spite of the accusations and additional surveillance, nothing has been proved about any cheating.

Chess moves are recorded using a simple notation such as "Nf6" or "Bc3."

It would not be that complicated to develop a body language with a willing partner (such as somebody in the audience) to communicate those moves to the player. The body language could consist of innocent moves such as crossing your legs, turning your head, checking your watch, rubbing your nose, etc.
