Scenes from Russia after Putin orders 300,000 more troops to fight in Ukraine

LONDON — Lines at neighboring borders and protests are just some of the scenes in Russia following President Vladimir Putin’s call for partial military mobilization.

Last week, Putin ordered up to 300,000 Russians to serve in the invasion of Ukraine that began in February. Since then, thousands of citizens have fled the country to bordering nations, including Georgia and Mongolia.

A satellite image of the Russia-Georgia border taken on Tuesday shows a multitude of cars and people waiting at the crossing. According to Russian state news outlet Tass, more than 5,000 cars had created the traffic jam, which was up to 10 miles long.

The announcement also sparked rise in the search for flights leaving Russia, sending prices soaring. Flights to destinations such as Turkey, Georgia and Armenia sold out.

Elsewhere, antiwar protesters clashed with police on a highway in Dagestan — one of Russia’s poorest regions. The demonstrators, mostly women, were chanting “No to war” as officers fired warning shots into the crowd in attempting to disperse them. It is unknown whether anyone was injured.

In the town of Ust-Ilimsk in Siberia, a draft officer was shot by a man angered by his friend’s conscription, the Guardian reported. A video appears to show the officer being shot at close range. The governor of the region said on Telegram that the officer was in critical condition and that the gunman would “absolutely be punished.”

“Partial mobilization affects everybody,” Michael Kofman, head of Russian studies at the CNA think tank in Washington, D.C., told the Associated Press. “And everybody in Russia understands ... that they could be the next wave, and this is only the first wave.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Russians not to submit to the “criminal mobilization” and to “at least try to protect their own lives.”

My grandfather’s were drafted for WWII, my uncles were drafted for Vietnam. When they arrived to report for duty, they knew they would get at least a few weeks of training, a pair of boots and a few pair of socks, and a weapon. Is this not the case in Russia?

The party looked to the peasant conscript soldiers - many of whom were wearing their first real pair of boots. When the boots had worn out, they’d be ready to listen. When the time came, I was able to take three whole battalions out of the front lines with me - the best day’s work I ever did. But for now, there was nothing to be done. There were too many volunteers. Most of it was mere hysteria.

By the second winter, the boots had worn out... but the line still held. Even Comrade Lenin underestimated both the anguish of that 900-mile long front... as well our own cursed capacity for suffering. Half the men went into action without any arms... irregular rations... led by officers they didn’t trust.

Finally, when they could stand it no longer, they began doing what every army dreams of doing...They began to go home. That was the beginning of The Revolution.

I am not sure if the reports of the mobilization of Russia is just propoganda, but it seems to have a lot of truth.

“least a few weeks of training, a pair of boots and a few pair of socks, and a weapon. Is this not the case in Russia?”

No. According to reports. The clothing issued has holes, old uniforms & old rusty weapons. Some from mobilization have aready been sent to Ukraine.

Russian commander, who has just been drafted himself, tells his recently drafted recruits about the mobilization. He says that nobody knows anything, there is absolute chaos, and nobody cares about them.

Doesn’t sound like the men are given much. It is very strange.

You can have the greatest weapons ever, best aircraft and Navy. But if you cannot outfit infantry, you are nothing.

I saw the close up photo in the linked article. Clearly half the cars “escaping” are going the wrong direction or there are as many fleeing to Russia as there are leaving.

Many of the vehicles have been turned around after being denied passage.

During Vietnam, troops got ninety days of basic training, then ninety days of advanced individual training before their first assignment. Logistics were never an issue.

Russian corruption has given short shrift to their conscripts in every category. Even the Ukrainians were logistically weak Many families here sent helmets boots, gloves etc. to relatives serving, along with freeze dried rations.

I was wondering how the Great Migration was doing this week, and found this escape story by some ethnic Russians who have successfully arrived in Antalya, a small city in Turkey. They reported when at the airport, some travelers were being pulled out of lines and taken off for questioning. One young pan signed up with a tourist package to get a longer visitors permit and also to defend himself against charges of draft evasion. He had not yet been given his call-up notice. A city official said they are getting as many as 19,000 Russians a day, apparently just for his city. Wonder what the figure is for all Turkey.
