October Drag Story Hour has returned to Ithaca for the 2022 Fall season. Parents could bring their kids to Buffalo Street Books Sunday morning for a glamorous storytime experience.
Miss Coraline Chardonnay and Miss Tilia Cordata have been doing Drag Story Hour for the last four years. Starting in the Fall of 2018, they read children's books to parents and kids throughout the Ithaca community and even held story time virtually during COVID. People were invited to come dressed in the costume of their choice. On Sunday, many did just that, kicking off the 2022 fall season's story hours.
“We tend to work some lessons into our readings, whether its language or science or history or something else,” Tilia said, adding, “It's both story hour and like mini secret lessons.”
Caroline and Tilia say the goal of story hour is to provide people with a different perspective. They emphasize the important lessons from the stories they read and feel it's crucial to use them in educating the youth.
“They need to see stories about different experiences; both that reflect their own experiences and that are outside of it,” Coralina said. “They need that window into perspective, and that's why stories are so important.”
Drag story hour will return back to Buffalo Street Books in December. More places people can catch storytime with them are online.
