European legislators on Thursday evening reached an agreement to phase out the sale of new combustion engine cars and vans by 2035.

The deal between representatives of the European Parliament and the European Council was struck at around 21:00 CET and represents the first made under the bloc’s flagship Fit for 55 package to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030.

The new legislation plans for a 55% CO2 emission reduction target for new cars and 50% for new vans by 2030 compared to 2021 levels and for a 100% CO2 emission cut by 2035, effectively prohibiting the sale of new combustion engine cars.

Transport accounts for 30% of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions and almost two-thirds of oil used in the EU, according to the European Environment Agency.

“With these targets, we create clarity for the car industry and stimulate innovation and investments for car manufacturers. In addition, purchasing and driving zero-emission cars will become cheaper for consumers,” Dutch MEP Jan Huitema, the Parliament’s rapporteur, said in a statement.

Frans Timmermans, who took part in the negotiations as the Commission’s representative, took to Twitter to celebrate the agreement, writing: “EU car industry is ready, consumers are eager to embrace zero-emission mobility. So let’s go full speed ahead!” …

Idiots.

Before you “phase out” ANYTHING, you come up with a TRIED, WORKABLE alternative - FIRST.

This is BASIC common sense.

No world “leader” seems to have this anymore.

Part of the reason is to price the average person out of owning a car in the first place. That is probably the MAIN goal.

Time will tell on this 2035 deadline. California and a few other states are also using this 2035 benchmark to phase out the internal combustion engine.

No increase in base load generation, massive increase in electrical demand, and not enough time or people to addrress the generation/transmission/distribution issues.

The chaos, tragedy, and societal stress to be caused by this nonsense is of no concern to our betters.

Correct. They aren’t trying to ban ICE cars, they’re trying to ban cars, period. The plebs don’t need to travel. They belong to the land.

No, the common sense is out the door.

It seems like a cult, the cult of environmentalism. We just aren’t supposed to ask, will we have electrical generating capacity by 2035 to recharge all these cars. At the same time as doing away with gasoline and diesel vehicles, we are supposedly going to have electricity generated by wind and solar and geothermal, and also phase out coal and natural gas powered power plants. We aren’t allowed to use nuclear in the worldview of the enviro extremists.

Time will tell on all of this.

Of course not. We are deplorables or useful idiots.

I work in electrical distribution, and the writing is on the wall.

No combustion engines by 2035? My Uncle Danko in Hungary is already onboard with the idea.

The left has it all figured out. You just install lots of electrical outlets to run things.

I think buggy-makers and horse breeders are going to have a bright future. The old-timey wagons used for hauling goods from community to community will probably need specially-bred hours bred for stamina. The buggy-whip makers should also prepare to gear up production.

Oh, but all that horse poop . . . dangerous to the environment, right? It’s why the powers that be pushed cars and trucks in the first place.

The EU to phase out cars by 2035?

There may not be a EU by then?
