Legendary soccer star Pele has been transferred to an end-of-life care unit at a Brazilian hospital, according to reports.
The 82-year-old Brazilian soccer star, known as the “King,” is being treated for colon cancer and was diagnosed with a respiratory infection after being hospitalized Tuesday for “a reassessment of chemotherapy treatment.”
The cancer was detected last year, according to a statement from the Sao Paulo Hospital, the Folha de Sao Paulo reported.

Victory with Stallone and Caine?
yep.
That is a tough way to end a pretty spectacular life.
Good flick. I saw it when I was young and never forgot about it.
I saw the actual Bookman passed last year.
“James Evans” is still around…
The easiest way to understand the difference is in palitative care death is not imminent. Hospice care averages 19 days in the US. Obviously every case is different.
Yes, important distinction!
Is that how he got his name?
Pele’s actual name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento. His parents named him after Thomas Edison and sometimes their version is rendered as Edison.
He got the nickname Pele (the second e has an accent which I cannot render here) because as a boy in school, he pronounced the name of the local legend goalkeeper Bile (bee-lay) (also with the unseen accent) more like “Pele,” so it was all in fun, but also it turned out the word means miracle in Hebrew (not known at the time to anyone concerned).
Pele was much like Tiger Woods, an obvious phenom from an early age and able to turn pro quite young (16), shortly after getting his nickname, which stuck apparently.
Reading his biography (about half of which was not new to me as a lifelong soccer fan), it was interesting that not only did he score legendary goals, he also took a shot on another legend, England goalkeeper Gordon Banks, at the 1970 world cup, which was saved and recalled as the greatest save of soccer history. That didn’t happen very often. Lionel Messi recently overtook Pele’s record number of “club” goals (Pele at Santos, Messi at Barcelona).
Also like TW, Pele was quite a hit with the ladies and fathered quite a few children in affairs as well as being married three times. Just a factoid, not something I would urge upon anyone, having one wife and your own kids is plenty for most normal men.
humblegunner write: “Adios, Pepe.
_________
Pele. Not Pepe.
Understood?
[Entendiste?]
Amen.
So Pepe was a kickball star 'way back in the day.
He was some kind of Mexican.
Whoopie for him.
Aren't most Mexicans named Pepe and play kickball?
Oh... my bad.
Some Mexicans are named Jesus too.
So Pepe and Jesus pretty much covers the whole male Mexican population.
Pepe is a nickname for Jose.
Yeah, well...
Pepe is an old kickball player likely about to croak.
Probably went to a Mexican doctor who prescribed rubbing some
Yucca juice and rat pee on his butt. It’s the “culture”.
If so...then it’s closely related ekated to pele...because it means skin...LOL.
Pele means either skin or related to fighting.
