Not such a great story. It attempts to minimize the theft which started the fracas, even though the three students involved plead guilty.

It appears to me it attempt to paint Oberlin college as the "victim".

Along with their saying that it was basically not financially harmful to the college as they had plenty of insurance.... which means everyone’s insurance costs go up because this college is stupid.

Interesting that a college has $36.6 million laying around yet nobody ever talks about tuition price gouging, only that taxpayers must foot the bill for student loans.

Typical "unbiased" reporting.

It is remarkable how well coordinated the messaging can be, a small school here in the midwest, well regarded, has a $2 Billion dollar endowment last I checked. This isn’t really unusual, lots of the large Ivy league schools probably have more money than some small countries.

Whether or not College should be “free” has nothing to do with it, but isn’t it “interesting” the debate never, ever revolves around the schools providing this.

Of course it used to be getting into a College didn’t always really revolve around money. A prospective student had to have the chops, it didn’t matter how much money his parents had, he wasn’t getting in without good grades and an aptitude for “higher learning”. California state schools were free for Californians.

Excellent. I’m glad to se the Wokesters actually had to pay for a deliberate lie that harmed others.

MAYBE at least some of them will think twice about doing something like that again. There needs to be MUCH more of this.

I dunno about that. Connections and money ALWAYS had a lot to do with who got in at the exclusive universities.

Do you really think the Bushes, the Gores, the Kennedys, the Clintons and every other kid of every other wealthy and/or powerful person “has the chops” to get into the Harvards and the Yales? Of course not. Mommy and Daddy’s money and power opens the door for them - even when they are complete dunces. It has ever been thus.

College tuition for elite universities has always been a filter to weed out the poor from enrolling en masse.

Interesting that a college has $36.6 million laying around

The college had to use funds that were committed to other purposes. The college, as I recall, had about $100 million in its endowment fund, all earmarked for future projects and scholarships. They resisted placing funds in escrow, but the Ohio Supreme Court was having none of it. Their insurance company has resisted paying because they claim, with some justification, that Oberlin's employee's actions were outrageous and deliberate and not covered by their policy. They would have been covered if the employee had published an article in an Oberlin publication libeling Gibson's. The employee used Oberlin facilities and supplies to publish incendiary lies about Gibson's, and led demonstrations and boycotts on company time. Activities that were not covered by insurance, and which formed the basis for the lawsuit.

As part of the settlement Oberlin made a public retraction and apology, but only in the most niggling and perfunctory manner. They are scum.

I surprised that Harvard hasn't offered her an endowed and tenured seat.

I don’t believe this was an insurable claim like someone getting injured on school property. By definition, defamation and slander are willful acts that don’t involve mishaps, negligence, etc. And even if compensatory damages in a case are insurable, punitive damages are not.

There WAS an insurance company involved in these proceedings on behalf of the school, but that was only because the school was required to post an appeal bond after the original judgement was handed down. As I understand it, the bond process involves a major financial company putting aside the cash to cover the amount of the award after determining that the school had sufficient assets (real estate, endowment, etc.) to cover the full amount.
