(WSVN) - A Florida man tapped into the Christmas spirit by showing his appreciation to essential workers.

Patrick Rhodes is a giver of the extraordinary kind.

“I have two jobs, and I’m able to squeeze in time to give back,” said Rhodes. “I think we can all set aside an hour or so to reach back to our community.”

Two years ago, when the pandemic hit, Rhodes decided he wanted to do something for essential workers in Hillsborough County.

He bought pizzas and delivered them on his lunch break; he gave away 600 pies.

“My passion is giving back and just getting out and talking to the people in the community, telling them how much I appreciate what they do and what they bring to the community. You know, makes me smile, makes me happy,” said Rhodes.

The effort was so important to him that he started the Lunch for Heroes campaign.

This year, Rhodes provided meals for staff in Hillsborough County schools.

“I just see it as waking up each day as an opportunity to give back,” he said. “I know it’s an opportunity to bring a smile to somebody, you know, so that’s how I see it, you know?”

On this day, it’s a special delivery for those at Tampa Bay Elementary.

Most government employees have pensions and better healthcare than private employees. Why not do this for convenience store or day care employees instead?

Media programming...

The Media used to tell us how hard government workers had it... now they tell us police are all corrupt and racists...

Only psychos consider other people’s lives and livelihoods to be “non-essential.”

You raise a valid point, but it would’ve taken a bit more homework on his part

He didn’t give “back”. He gave. You can give any thing you want to anyone you want, but only give back something that was given to you in the first place, and I’m fairly sure those “essential workers” were doing their jobs ie being paid as teachers.

He did all that on his lunch hour? That took some effort, I’d say just for the time it must have took, but it was very generous of him. He must have a very good job..the last job I had sure didn’t allow anywhere near that kind of generosity; it was a meager living for just 2 people.

I agree he was generous. More than I would be, but I was objecting to the way the headline was written. He gave and he gave generously, but he didn’t give back. That must be in the style manual for news organizations.
