Authorities received reports of an issue involving Delta Flight 447, which was headed for Atlanta, around 1:30 p.m., according to Orange County Fire Authority.

Officials say one of the engines on the Boeing 757-200 caught on fire as the plane was positioned at the beginning of the runway. 172 passengers and crew were on board at the time.

“The right side engine blew off as we were halfway down the runway and kind of skidded off the road,” said Tim Carlson, one of the passengers. “We saw a big burst of flames and then black smoke.”

The pilot initiated an extinguishing system while emergency crews were able to extinguish the flames. The aircraft was eventually towed back to a boarding gate so passengers could deplane.

Yikes. John Wayne has short runway as they go.
Always hated flying out of there because they climb extra steep for a few seconds then throttle back and level off until they get out over the ocean.

I’ve heard San Diego is the only place worse in that department.

With all the weird and improbably commercial aircraft failures happening of late, it sounds like the carriers have been excused from doing their required preventive maintenance? FAA, care to chime (que the crickets)?

San Diego is scary landing. The approach is over mountains (always at night or fog for me), then they come right down through the city past buildings and 20 feet over a parking structure.

China has recently figured out how to make turbine blades.
Same with believe it or not ballpoint pens..

Yup. The ALPA gives it a black star and consider it to be the 5th most dangerous US airport. BTW John Wayne ranks 2nd or 3rd on that list.

Yeah, I was never comfortable flying into Lindbergh.

First time I was in San Diego, I was at the gas pump, looked up and actually saw the passengers in the window seats. I freaked !
