Friday at John F Kennedy International Airport, between a Boeing 777 headed to the UK and a Boeing 737 headed to the Dominican Republic.
One plane was about to take off while the other was crossing the same runway.
The collision was averted when an air controller noticed the two.
Using an expletive, the air traffic controller attempted to stop the Delta aeroplane as it was preparing to take wing.
"Delta 1943, cancel take-off clearance! Delta 1943, cancel take-off clearance!" the controller was captured saying in an audio recording made by LiveATC, a website that posts flight communications.
The Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 then came to a stop on the runway, while the American Airlines Boeing 777 safely crossed in front of it around 20:45 EST (01:45 GMT), said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The FAA said the planes were around 1,000ft (300m) away from each other when the Delta aircraft stopped. It has since launched an investigation into the near collision.

The more I read on this, it looks like the American Airlines crew was following clearances for a different American Airlines aircraft.
I've done that on Air Force bases, including once on a civilian charter bus.
Although the term “$h!t” might be improper protocol, it readily and clearly conveys a serious problem.
There are times when $hit fits. This was one of them.
The comments on the youtube thread said the plane taking off was already at 115mph when they began braking.
Scary. That would have been an ugly t-bone between two aircraft and the plane taking off would have probably been approaching 150mph (my guesstimate based on location)?
Yep- there was a female pilot on the recording on that AA plane.
I was a flight attendant from the 80’s to 2010. Those diversity hires - not so great.
I have never met you but pretty sure being a flight attendant for that long has given you a PhD in stupid people! :)
I always laugh when I am in airports. It is one of the few buildings in the world where the collective IQ drops 50pts driving onto the property.
#19 Who do they think they are? Harrison Ford? !!

If one of the planes went off the runway into the water they could’ve changed the name of the airport from JFK to Ted Kennedy.
Ha Ha. I had to look that one up again as I thought Harrison Ford landed on a taxiway that was parallel to the runway. Yes, he did.

The control tower was heard screaming, “NO, THE OTHER RIGHT!” to the new affirmative action pilot.
Its was a diversity AA hire .
That’s funny! Thanks.
That's nothing. In Africa people casually stroll across the runway while you're on short final.
I would think that every airport and every airplane would have gps and all positions plotted exactly on a map by now.
Someone is blocking this from happening like the airlines and the gov’t.
The part that confuses me is the tower only saying that take of clearance is canceled. Does that automatically mean that the pilot should use all means to stop immediately. Why not say something like “Urgent-Stop Hard”.
My guess is that the Delta Pilot had already seen this coming and had already slammed on the brakes at about the same time their clearance was canceled. It is hard to believe they would not see other plane crossing in front of them.
Human error in the tower?
Diversity rules?
Allahu Achbar event?
I was going to say that air travel is safe and effective.
But these planes had not left the ground .... 🤔
