Israel was behind Sunday morning's drone strike on an Iranian munitions facility according to the Wall Street Journal. The Jerusalem Post on Monday reported the attack was a 'phenomenal success.' The attack follows an unannounced visit by CIA Director William Burns to Israel last week. Israel was behind Sunday morning's drone strike on an Iranian munitions facility; the Wall Street Journal has reported, citing American officials. The strike, which Iran says it thwarted, came after the US and Israel held a series of meetings and military exercises.
One explosives-laden drone was shot down by an Iranian air defense system while two others crashed into a protective mesh above a military workshop in the city of Isfahan in the early hours of the morning, Iran's Defense Ministry said.
"This unsuccessful attack did not cause any loss of life and caused minor damage to the workshop's roof," the ministry stressed, according to state media outlet IRNA. Tehran did not initially blame the attack on Israel.
However, unnamed US officials and other "people familiar with the operation" told the Wall Street Journal that Israel and the Mossad was responsible for the strike. The Israeli military has not officially confirmed its involvement, in keeping with its usual policy of silence following attacks on foreign targets. The Jerusalem Post on Monday reported the attack was a 'phenomenal success,' disputing Tehran's claims. The Post report cited Western intelligence and foreign sources.
The attack came after CIA Director William Burns made an unannounced visit to Israel last week to discuss Iran. While the specifics of his discussion with his Israeli counterparts are unknown, Gen. Herzi Halevi, the Israel Defense Forces' chief of staff, told the Wall Street Journal last week that the US and Israel were readying "offensive capabilities" for use against the Islamic Republic.
These "capabilities" were demonstrated last week when the two allies held their largest-ever joint military drills, in which they practiced mid-air refueling and strikes against air-defense systems.
Washington has accused Tehran of supporting Russia's military operation in Ukraine by supplying 'kamikaze' drones. While Russia and Iran officially denied this, both nations have drawn closer together since the Ukrainian conflict began, increasing their trade turnover during 2022 and integrating their bank card systems earlier this month.
Gen. Halevi said that the US and Israel are explicitly aiming to "limit the bad actions that Iran is taking all over the world," including its "negative contribution" to the conflict in Ukraine.
Sunday's drone strikes happened amid reports on social media of explosions across the Islamic Republic. A blast occurred at an oil production plant in the northwestern city of Azarshahr in the province of East Azerbaijan, while a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the province at the same time. The oil plant explosion has not been blamed on foul play.
A little late to the party, WSJ
Will NATO now bomb Tel Aviv? After all, an ‘unprovoked’ attack on another nation seems to be the litmus test.
wsj lies a lot
Mandatory Casablanca Claud Raines pictur.
FIRAN.
Should have sent them back to the 7th century in January 1980.
Based on the secondary explosions and huge fires visible on the cellphone videos that were linked on Twitter it appeared pretty successful to me.
Some of the cellphone videos had people in the streets with the fire in the background protesting against the mad mullahs.
We should support the Iranian majority who DO NOT support the Islamic regime.
It was carless workers throwing out burning cigarette butts.
Iran is constantly arming and supporting terrorist attacks on Israel, not to mention publicly calling for their annihilation all the time. It is not an “unprovoked attack.”
Ditto Ukes for their russkie neighbors, until 2/24/22.
No, because the US/NATO would like to see regime change in Iran too. They want Iranian gas going to Europe instead of China and elsewhere to make up for the Russian gas they now intend to boycott. Same for Syria, they want regime change there so other gulf states can lay pipelines across Syria on its way to Europe.
That’s unbelievably stupid if you are correlating between Russia and Iran. NATO is not bombing Russia.
Why? I don’t want to kill the Iranian people. They have an evil regime.
They have even less say over what their government does than you or I do about the southwest border. We can at least criticize it without worrying that we will lose our head.
They can’t say crap. It is a mistake to paint them all with the same brush.
I don’t support abortion but for decades my government has used my tax money to fund it around the world and here at home.
Most Iranians do not support this regime and they live in fear going back to the Carter era when OUR government allowed the overthrow of the Shah followed by the embassy/hostage debacle. I would bet that it was less than 3% of the Iranian population.
We have a few “January 6th” prisoners and they have tens of thousands with more being added weekly who protest.
Some people believe that it was roughly 1 in 10 Americans that were hardcore supporters of our own revolution.
History is full of lessons FRiend. I like the Persian people and always have - they deserve better and they deserve support from our nation to win their freedom. They are NOT a radical people - they live in an authoritarian state governed by the worst faction of their religion.
I would have never guessed.
Do they still charge a subscription for this inside information?
And... ?
So the Iranian factory that was making arms for Russia got zotted?
LOL!!
Well, I certainly hope so.
“Why? I don’t want to kill the Iranian people. They have an evil regime.”
How about 9/11 and the thousands of victims of terrorism iran is responsible for since then? There should have been bombing runs over iran every time an IED went off in iraq and afghanistan.
There should be no bridges, power plants, oil facilities, etc. in iran.
But, hey, since it apparently didn’t affect you let’s just “give peace a chance”.
