Gun confiscated: Nanuet HS student brought weapon to campus, superintendent reports

A Nanuet High School student brought a handgun to school Monday, which was confiscated “without incident,” schools Superintendent Kevin McCahill said in a statement.

Administrators were told Monday afternoon that a student had a gun, according to Clarkstown police, and the gun was found around 3 p.m.

Police said no threats were made by the student, and the gun was found during a search of the student's belongings.

“It is important for the community to know that this report was made by an individual who followed our Emergency Response protocols which encourages immediate reports of any potential threats to the safety of our members of our school community,” McCahill's statement said.

Clarkstown police are continuing the investigation.

“The Nanuet School District has a zero-tolerance policy against unlawful behavior in our schools,” McCahill said.

Betchya if he pretended to be a "frozen vegetable" so he could get into the girl's locker room there'd be no problemo. When I was in school it wasn't unusual to see Black guys, 14-15yrs old from nearby Hillburn walking along Rt59 carrying .22s, making their way in the woods to hunt small game. Despite race relations being what they were, nobody gave it a second thought. And they had the sense not to even think of stepping foot on school grounds armed.

My high school had a rifle team, both .22 and large caliber. Archery team too. Just about as good a shot as the rifle teams. My principal would stop you in the hall and ask to see your pocket knife? He would check first that you had one, and second it was honed properly and sharpened.

Lot’s of high schools had rifle clubs. Even in NYC. My dad went to Columbus HS in daBronx. Part of the basement, below the gym was used as a shooting range.

I knew a guy that did a lot of trapping/hunting/skinning, and he was a fanatic about his blade edges. He told me that when he was trying yo join a local mountain man group that one of the members asked to see his knife, and, saying “I’ll bet it’s not even sharp,” drew it across his palm. It probably worked on most prospective members, but this time it opened him ip.

I am far from any kind of hunter, warrior, or wilderness expert. But one of the last things my dad and I did together, before he was completely paralyzed, was me learning how to sharpen knives. The Old Man was a ‘contractor’ back in the day as well has having a lot of time in the Army.

For a city boy (I did try like hell to join the Army, too deaf from an ear infection), any of my blades would surprise the hell out of those Manly Men. But yeah, most people don’t know jack about sharpening blades, even some who you think would. Easy to do if you find it fun and relaxing.

I’ve got a couple of my dad’s pocket knives, and his Arkansas stone. Pretty easy to put a good edge on them, with a little effort.

That same guy had a friend that invariably cut himself pretty good whenever he gutted a deer. It was the one day a year that he handled a truly sharp knife.

I always warn my wife when I sharpen the kitchen knives. She still doesn’t really believe that a sharp knife is safer.

Most people haven’t really handled a genuinely sharp knife.

I can see how sharpening would be a real pain if you didn’t enjoy it. For me, it’s like the old man is right there, still; if someone just wanted to get it the hell done they’d be better off using a pro or even one of those gadgets that keep a consistent edge.

I’ve got a pretty nice collection of chef’s knives (a dozen or so, including some pre WW2 French carbon ones that take the best edge you have ever seen).

Sharpening and reloading, it’s like the old man is sitting right there with me, cig in hand, bitching about the commies and the hippies :-)

And creates a wound that heals better than one from a dull knife. I usually prove that when I use a newly sharpened knife in the kitchen.

Never did that, but I’ve had several chances to watch a fingernail regrow on a smashed digit.
