Harry Whittington, the man who former Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot while they were hunting quail on a Texas ranch 17 years ago, has died. He was 95.
Whittington died at his home Saturday in Austin, family friend Karl Rove said Monday.

In most states you have to die of the injury within one year. But it was a slob hunter move.
Well, having four heart attacks before the incident may have affected him somewhat.

He wasn’t shot, he was “peppered” with shotgun pellets at long range. I once had it happen while duck hunting with my father in the 1950s. We were well bundled up against the cold, and nothing reached our skin. Cheney did violate a cardinal rule of upland bird hunting on groups by following a bird too far, but the incident would never have rated a single column inch in the local paper if it hadn’t been Cheney, and there hadn’t been a coven of hostile “journalists” around.

The common Law said that if someone dies “within a year and a day” of you injuring them, you can be charged with homicide. Cheney ran out the clock on him. At 82 Cheney will face his Maker soon enough, as will his errant daughter eventually.

At common law you can’t charge the fiend with murder if the person dies more than a year and a day after the injury.
