Prayers please. Barefoot and in shorts….. I went out to pickup in the garage to retrieve my I pad . Decided to get handgun also….out of the console between seats. Leaned in and got them. Leaning back out and dropped the gun. Landed on the concrete in garage. One in the chamber, not cocked, on safety, and in a holster. It discharged into my left leg about half way between ankle and knee. Broke both bones. I mean completely. Did not hit an artery.
Gun was a 90’s model Springfield 45. It is a P9 series, double/single action, but chambered in 45 caliber. Im in hospital. Suppose to do surgery tomorrow.
So I can cross shooting myself with my own 45 off my bucket list.
Yeah, it hurt bad. Legion of police showed up when wife called 911. Rough ambulance ride to the hospital. I dont recommend this.
Appreciate all prayers. Thank you
Series 70 and earlier 1911s can sometimes do the same thing when dropped on their uncocked hammers, despite the inertial firing pin. That was the whole point of the Series 80 changes.
That said, you *can’t* put a 1911 on safe unless it is cocked, so that doesn’t happen very often. I suspect John Browning was kind of sending a message with that...
Nah, the very Earth itself fired the cartridge. Blame the Earth! :P
Prayer sent for you. All the best going forward.
Low magazine capacity for size, bulky, bit heavy... :P Also, endorsing Bill Ruger’s “Nobody needs more than 15 rounds!” because he wasn’t able to design a competitive firearm that held more. Remember, he supported the Brady Bill to try to protect his pwesus pwesus P-series and Mini-14s.
Since Bill died, they’ve made much better firearms. I’ll give you that the P-series is sturdy and reliable, though large and not terribly accurate on average.
The P9 isn’t a 1911, it’s a CZ-75 by way of Tanfoglio’s cloning of it, with the firing pin block removed by Springfield.
Our prayers are gping out for your speedy and full recovery.
Prayers up!
All of the XDs are - they’re only made in Croatia. But that’s the thing about Springfield - a lot of their guns historically are imports, made with major import parts, or in the case of the P9, contract made imports. The P9 is a TZ-75 made by Tanfoglio of Italy with the firing pin block removed (because Tanfoglio had problems with the design). Later P9s went beyond that and didn’t even have the slide machined for the firing pin block.
This isn’t one of the Springfield 1911 clones. It’s an imported Italian copy of the CZ-75.

...which Springfield deleted the firing pin block from.
Ouch!
Busted my ankle in 2016... no fun at all.
Prayers for your rapid and complete recovery.

I don’t know, maybe just let the cops keep that particular one and get yourself something that’s more modern and drop safe? :P If you want something familiar, there’s lots of CZ-75s and clones out there that handle exactly the same but actually do have the drop safety systems intact.
Prayers for your swift recovery.
This was a case of a defective design/build, though. The P9 is not drop safe because Springfield removed the firing pin safety from it.
Yes. Decided this morning to sell it at a gunshow some saturday soon

Thanks for setting me straight on this. My knowledge is limited for sure. The only real hands-on experience I had was in the MC with the 1911. There are a lot of variations out there now that have come along since 1969. I loved my military issued 1911, shot expert with it in my first qualification in Basic School. We had competitions on how fast we could assemble the pistol.
Prayers for this difficult leg repair and the probably lengthy healing process. We also pray for your full mobility.
We all give thanks your injury was not more critical as it could have been.
Learning the failings of a tool in a manner like this is terrible.
Your wife now will have to clean out the garage and throw out all the stuff that doesn’t make sense to her. LOL
I’d consider framing the offending gun behind tempered glass and have a baseball handy to throw at it whenever his leg tells him it’s going to rain tomorrow.
I got a buddy whos little pomeranian dog was shifting on his lap and pulled the trigger on his 1911 and shot him right in the knee. He said it hurt a lot too.
We’re getting too old for this sh!t.

Prayers for a quick and complete recovery. Look forward to the time when you’re well enough that friends and family will abuse you for doing this.
Thanks for having the guts to post about this - you may save one of us from doing the same.
