Barista Calls Out Her Manager For Preferring To Hire Workers Without Tattoos Or Piercings — 'How Does This Affect My Ability To Make Coffee?'

Stigmas and prejudices often stop people with tattoos from being hired but this worker is done with the unfair treatment.

A woman is calling out her former boss for preferring to hire people who don't have any tattoos or piercings.

In a TikTok video, Ellie, who worked as a barista, explained that while working at a cafe, she ran into issues with her boss surrounding the idea of employees being hired who didn't have a clean-cut look about them.

"We had to read all their handbooks, and they do allow tattoos as long as they're not on your face or neck," she revealed. "But there's no nose rings." Ellie herself has tattoos on her arms, and a nose ring in.

She continued, saying that the management allowed her to keep her nose ring in while she was working, but still ran into some snide comments being said by her manager.

"The manager was talking and had to interview some people and was like, 'I interviewed this candidate and she didn't even have any tattoos or nose rings like I'm so excited.'" After hearing that, Ellie pointed out that she works as a barista, who is more than likely getting paid minimum wage.

If I was hiring a candidate would lose points for visible and excessive tattoos & piercings, especially on a pretty girl (yes I'm a sexist pig). I would wonder if their "personal preferences" would affect their work ethics.

I also get further amazed at how the tattooing/piercing culture has grown, it is not uncommon to see middle aged people with tattoos

Tattoos have destroyed a generation of female beauty.

Poor Work ethic, poor impulse control, psychological issues, sexuality promiscuity.

Plenty of exceptions, but many studies show people with tats and piercings have those issues.

She may make a perfectly fine cup of coffee, but if the customers gag over her appearance that could hurt sales.

It was the manager’s prerogative…..none of her business…..

I truly don’t know how the ‘tat’ craze started, or who started it…..especially for women!!
Men, I get…..but women?

I now see nurses with them…..and even squeaky clean Chic Fil A hired tatted kids……( they were having a hard time getting enough kids willing to work, so I guess they had to change their standards)

I am woman and won’t hire anyone with visible tattoos or excessive piercings. It isn’t about them being able to do the job, it is about meeting customer expectations. Which is about me hiring the right people for the job.

I have clients that would totally freak out and fire my company if they saw a purple haired, punked out person showing up to care for their pet on the security cameras. OMG, they’d watch their cameras the whole time with much scrutiny and it would ruin their entire day or vacation.

Image matters. It always has. Whether it is a waitress or an attorney or doctor.

It has nothing to do with your ability to make coffee, but instead has to do with your appearance ruining the appetite of the customers because of its repulsiveness

I’ve often wondered:

Do food service workers tend to have tattoos because tattoos are so prevalent in the industry, or do they work in food service because they have tattoos?

Tats and piercings are a visible sign of a lifestyle that does affect work ethics.

There’s nothing worse than seeing a pretty girl that defaced her body with all that garbage.

Some customers view visible tattoos and piercings as “dirty” and it affects their buying decisions from food vendors.

This is well known and established.

A few years ago I was at a restaurant. The couple across the way seemed kind of weird. All i could see were their faces. He looked like a total derelict while the girl was a knockout. Then I noticed that she was completely tatted up, arms, neck etc. Totally ruined herself for life.

The other day I was talking to a guy at a trade show. He was a builder. Face tat’s, some weird clear plastic things on his nostrils, nose ring, something piercing his eyelid.

He seemed very competent and knowledgeable but if he came to my house to try to sell me on a job, I’d have a hard time hiring him over the other competent guy.

Tattoos have destroyed a generation of female beauty.

Far too often the tattoos are a result of a spontaneous or emotional decision. That said, there are some young women here in Central Texas that appear to be unable to stop. They are tatted everywhere. Legs, arms, neck. Many will come to regret this, but few see the long-term implications.

have you ever watched that show horders? it is amazing how many of them are nurses!!!

No wonder antibiotic-resistant germs are so common in hospitals when the nurses are living on top of mountains of rotting garbage.

I love tattoos, it makes it easier to know who to avoid. It is like a blinking neon sign saying, I am a loser who makes bad choices.

Wrong question
‘How does this affect my ability to make coffee?’

Right Question
How does it help project a favorable the image of the business?
