ABSTRACT: Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum, and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post, (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus’ death was ensured by the thrust of a soldier’s spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross. Jesus’ death was ***verified*** by the thrust of a soldier’s spear into his side.
Fixed that fer ya, doc-O.
“Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross.”
What on earth kind of statement is this.
Who on earth ever questioned the fact that Jesus Christ died on the cross?
Such that they sought the advice of modern medical experts or historians?
“Who on earth ever questioned the fact that Jesus Christ died on the cross?”
People that don’t believe in Jesus’s resurrection. He just fainted or passed out. Then 36 hours later after he was rested up inside the tomb he pushed the stone out of the way and escaped.
“Who on earth ever questioned the fact that Jesus Christ died on the cross?”
Sadly, lots of people, included some who theorize that he was simply drugged to simulate death and then revived.
Since when do we need a doctor to tell us Jesus died on the cross? And of course it was horrific.
There are those who say it never happened in the first place.
Others say Jesus didn't really die and he left the tomb he was laid to rest in, under his own power.
Still others say "sure, he died" and then go on to claim the disciples managed to steal his body from the tomb after the Roman guards posted to secure the tomb, fell asleep.
There are all kinds of deniers out there.
All of them 1,000,000% wrong.
Happy Easter! We serve a Risen Christ, our Savior!
Amen 🙏🏻!!!! Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ!
That’s right!
It sometimes took several days for a person to die of crucifixion, but the Romans would often flog the condemned so that they would die quicker. This was not done out of mercy, but sadism. Scourging was a brutal punishment that tore open the skin and muscle right down to the skeletal bones. The devil was hoping to break the will of Jesus, but could not. He was faithful to the end.
Take time to read the article. It’s one of the best things JAMA has published.
Jesus Christ was publicly humiliated, and ultimately executed, after incitement by the government of his own people.
I can only imagine the slogans and propaganda coming from the Herod and the Empire’s own version of CNN and MSNBC. I think we would all recognize it today.
It’s clear you haven’t read the article. It’s quite good. I encourage you to take some time to read through it.
In the case of the two next to Jesus, they broke their legs so that they’d die before the Sabbath day. Jesus was already dead by that time, however, because his scourging was particularly harsh.
Yes, one of the most brutal ways to die.
Have read it already, many years ago, IIRC.
He died as a volitional act.
From the Douay Rheims:
The Death of Jesus
(Psalm 22:1-31; Matthew 27:45-56; Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49)
28Afterwards, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said: I thirst. 29Now there was a vessel set there, full of vinegar. And they, putting a sponge full of vinegar about hyssop, put it to his mouth. 30Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.
Jesus’ Side is Pierced
(Zechariah 12:10-14)
31Then the Jews (because it was the parasceve), that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day (for that was a great sabbath day), besought Pilate that their legs might be broken: and that they might be taken away. 32The soldiers therefore came: and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him. 33But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side: and immediately there came out blood and water. 35And he that saw it hath given testimony: and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true: that you also may believe. 36For these things were done that the scripture might be fulfilled: You shall not break a bone of him. 37And again another scripture saith: They shall look on him whom they pierced.
What a small life they must lead.
A shame, really. Sad.
