Consumers already contending with a squeeze on their bank accounts due to inflation are now facing more pressure as businesses introduce new tipping features at self-checkout machines.
Companies, including airports, bakeries, coffee shops and sports stadiums, have now introduced the self-serve tipping option, where customers can leave tips including the typical 20%, despite facing minimal to no interaction with any employee, according to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal.
Customers report feeling obligated to leave a tip as they question where and to whom the extra money is actually going, but businesses are increasingly embracing the option to boost pay for workers outside of salaries, according to WSJ.
William Michael Lynn, a consumer behavior and tip culture professor at Cornell University's Nolan School of Hotel Administration, told the newspaper that businesses "are taking advantage of an opportunity," and "who wouldn't want to get extra money at very little cost if you could?"

Lol! Hilarious. You’re right though, some will.
Any business that pulls those road apples on me has lost my business. Buh-bye!
Not to mention the idiot who watches the self checkout machines stands there yelling about leaving 5 star reviews, and checking to see if you do. I never took those stupid surveys, but I always 1 star and let him see it.
I refuse to use the damned things. If I do the work, I want a discount!
This is what a collapsing society looks like.
In addition to getting sick of being asked to tip everyone, I’m also sick of being asked to contribute to some corporation’s favorite charity.
Here’s an idea: Donate money out of your profits, not your customers pocket.
I want an Eff U button!
Since I am actually doing the work, they should give me a 20% discount on my purchase.
Nope.
I wonder how limited or how broad a definition of “self check out” they are using. If they mean absolutely NO employee action or interaction, then fine - tipping in such instances is wrong, because it is not a reward for employee services identifiable in any employee’s actions directly for a customer.
But some situations are “self check out” in a more limited sense. For instance, at a coffee shop I go to, the employee only has to enter the order in a machine and the barrista gets the order. The order taker does nothing else. I insert my card in the payment collection device and it takes my payment. It may be just a little more than that if the order taker has to also get a selected pastry out of the case and put in in a small brown bag for me. Yes, that is “limited” self check out and unlike a sit down restaurant it is limited service as well. Is that limited service due a tip??? I think some small tip is OK for that limited service.
“typical 20 percent”? I don’t think so.
Yes, idiot sheeple will tip. Tipping a machine and not knowing or wondering where the money goes. They deserve to not have any money at all.
just stop it people.
Yep, if there is actually no service from a human, I’m not leaving a tip. If someone at a Pizza place hands my to-go order across the counter, I tip a buck or two. Crazy good service at a nice sit-down restaurant, I’ll usually tip up to 25%.
Customers are already doing the checkout of their food at grocery stores. When do they start unloading the trucks and stocking the shelves?
if the tip goes to me for doing all the work the. i am for it. Otherwise forget it
I run a service based small business doing quilting for others. If offered I would refuse any tips. I charge a fair price for my services and do not expect or want more
the stupid! it burns!!
A tip culture professor? Seriously?
“Customers are already doing the checkout of their food at grocery stores”
Yep, I gladly use self-checkout, in fact it’s a selling point for me.
I usually have 10-12 items maximum at the grocery store. I’m finished at the self-check out in a couple of minutes. A hundred times better than standing behind a line of folks with screaming kids while the cashier calls for price checks.
