DEAR JANE: I dumped my husband to marry again - but I still love the man I left and it's torture!
Daily Mail UK ^ | 2/5/23 | Dear Jane

Posted on 06/05/2023 1:28:54 PM PDT by DallasBiff

Dear Jane,

I left my husband four years ago when I met the new love of my life who I am now married to, but every day I realize what a terrible mistake I made, and I would do anything to turn back the clock.

I am not exactly unhappily married, but I know this isn't what marriage should be, and I am burning with regret over leaving my former husband, who was - I now know - the true great love of my life. He is with someone else now, and my current husband would be devastated if he knew how I felt, so I am carrying this alone.

Dear Regretful,

First of all, let me start by saying that I am sorry, truly, for the pain you are in. As a dyed-in-the-wool romantic, who grew up watching Hollywood movies and reading endless romance novels, the phrase that jumps out at me in your letter is this: 'I know this isn't what marriage should be.'

I have been thinking about our expectations around romance, and how horribly unprepared we are for the institution of marriage.

I was put off by...

I am sorry, truly, for the pain you are in.

Wait....what? Who's the victim here?

The letter sounds like some fledgling drama student writing a short story, hoping it is turned into a movie (for the umpty third time)

Given how they always have something ‘juicy’ to headline with, these “Dear Abby” type columns must either attract a sufficiently huge number of submissions in order for the columnist to high-grade them each time, or else they just make stuff up.

Given how well crafted some of the longer submissions are, I strongly suspect the “make stuff up” option, which is fitting- if we’re being honest, these columns are ultimately entertainment for most.

It’s perfect, really- even if you were to call out a columnist for having submissions in their own writing style, they could just say they rewrite them for clarity and/or to help mask the submitter’s writing style (for privacy).

Well, if she is a porn star or foreign model, she might look up Trump.

I’m not exactly sure what your response means.

But I think it’s always a good, Christian response to feel sorry for someone who has made a huge mistake. (’But for the grace of God...’)

Someday you will make one - if you haven’t made numerous ones already.

However, it rarely turns out well from them. A smart man would know that whatever she did to her previous relationship, she will do to him unless she believes that he is the best that she can get.

Well, made-up or not, the stories usually depict actual events that have happened to countless people, throughout human history.

They’re useful insofar as the advice is sound and wise.

Sounds familiar. Ex-wife contacted me 13 years after the fact to find out how I and my present wife were doing. Told her we are fine. That was 17 years ago. I knew the ex was screwing up her life when she divorced me, and I was glad to get out of the relationship.

I am neutral as of now between DeSantis and Trump, I want both of them in as strong a position as possible, so I can have a frickin’ choice for once.
