Don't trust corporations with your charity
American Thinker ^ | 11 Jun, 2023 | Trevor Thomas

At best, they have no idea what they're doing. At worst, they're supporting evil causes.

wait in line for the self-checkout even when a line for an in-person cashier is unoccupied.

It's not that I dislike human cashiers; it's just that I prefer being in control of the check-out process and the typical convenience of the self-checkout. There's another reason that I prefer the self-checkout: I never get solicited by a cashier at a self-checkout.

It seems that retail, fast food, financial corporations, and the like are in the business these days of asking their customers to donate to one pet cause or another. If you happen to have to deal with a cashier today, a common method of "charitable" soliciting often goes something like this: "Would you like to round up your purchase to support (fill in the blank)?"

My answer virtually every time: "No, thank you." This is not because I'm against charity; rather, it's because almost every corporation in America today has proven itself quite unworthy of stewardship over a single penny of my charitable income.

In case you haven't noticed, one of the largest reasons we're currently in a "woke" war is due to the actions of corporate America. On virtually every moral issue facing the world today, most all of corporate America stands in opposition to the truth. Capitalism — yes, even capitalism! — climate change, crime, guns, immigration, abortion, the evil LGBT agenda — corporate America is almost always on the wrong side of the truth.

I don’t want companies using my charity to improve their wokeist ESG score.

I do St. Jude at their website. I’m from the Danny Thomas era. He left an awesome legacy in our care.

My response: Would you like to round it down to support my favorite charity?

Ditto.

The Amazon.Smile program was handy until the lefties decided the corporation honchos should not be funding the religious or conservative groups.

read the dictionary definition of “charity” ...that is what it means.

The reliable resource - Webster’s Dictionary 1828

https://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/charity
CHARITY, noun

1. In a general sense, love, benevolence, good will; that disposition of heart which inclines men to think favorably of their fellow man, and to do them good. In a theological sense, it includes supreme love to God, and universal good will to men.

1 Corinthians 8:1. Colossians 3:14. 1 Timothy 1:5.

2. In a more particular sense, love, kindness, affection, tenderness, springing from natural relations; as the charities of father, son and brother.

3. Liberality to the poor, consisting in almsgiving or benefactions, or in gratuitous services to relieve them in distress.

4. Alms; whatever is bestowed gratuitously on the poor for their relief.

5. Liberality in gifts and services to promote public objects of utility, as to found and support bible societies, missionary societies, and others.

6. Candor; liberality in judging of men and their actions; a disposition which inclines men to think and judge favorably, and to put the best construction on words and actions which the case will admit. The highest exercise of charity is charity towards the uncharitable.

7. Any act of kindness, or benevolence; as the charities of life.

8. A charitable institution. Charity-school, is a school maintained by voluntary contributions for educating poor children.

Now, look at the slippery slope provided by the Apple Dictionary (There must be a joke in the “apple” dictionary.)

char·i·ty | ˈCHerədē |
noun (plural charities)
1 an organization set up to provide help and raise money for those in need: the charity provides practical help for homeless people.
• the body of organizations viewed collectively as the object of fundraising or of donations: the proceeds of the sale will go to charity.
2 the voluntary giving of help, typically in the form of money, to those in need: the care of the poor must not be left to private charity.
• help or money given voluntarily to those in need: an unemployed teacher living on charity.
3 kindness and tolerance in judging others: she found it hard to look on her mother with much charity.

• archaic love of humankind, typically in a Christian context: faith, hope, and charity.
PHRASES -
charity begins at home
proverb one’s first responsibility is for the needs of one’s own family and friends.

ORIGIN
late Old English (in the sense ‘Christian love of one’s fellows’): from Old French charite, from Latin caritas, from carus ‘dear’.

The left has moved the goal posts again.
Pray for our country.

These corporations extort money from their customers then brag about how much they, the corporation donated.

I’m not interested. We donate far beyond the average as a percentage of my income. Solely to the recipients of our choosing.

Not a penny goes to someone else’s choice.

Many charities use big name firms to create exposure and drive in more dollars.

Trouble is - these for profit firms skim up to 50 percent or more donations right off the top.

The Amazon.Smile program was handy until the lefties decided the corporation honchos should not be funding the religious or conservative groups.

I used that to donate to the FIRE (originally the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education and now The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression), a civil rights law firm that threatened and sued colleges for interfering with first amendment rights. Prevent students from setting up a pro-life protest and you might get sued by the FIRE. Very anti-Woke.

Not a penny to any “Charity”.
I’m done with all of that.

I give to my family, friends, and neighbors when they need help. I also maintain a large larder for other disasters and emergencies.

AND

When they are capable, I ask them to do something in exchange, maybe cut the grass of some others in need , chop firewood, paint a shed, etc . . . if not capable of that, I simply ask in return.

“Please pray for guidance.”

Perfect. Love that. I always say NO, but your idea is much better. ;)

“Would you like to round up your purchase”

I never do this. Let them virtue signal with their own money.

“The Amazon.Smile program was handy “

We used that to support a no-kill cat shelter in CA. By the time Amazon cut it off, that amounted to a great deal od money.

The shelter is totally non-political, but now they lose because of wokeness.

When I ran a local professional fundraising office, my personal commission was 50%.

That kind of work led to me getting out of sales and into a trade.
