The medication semaglutide, which is currently used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity, might also be an effective medication for alcohol dependence. In a study, the drug reduced alcohol relapse drinking and alcohol intake in rats by more than half.
Semaglutide is sold under brand names such as Ozempic. There is anecdotal evidence of patients with obesity or diabetes saying that their craving for alcohol has lessened since they started taking the drug.
Today, individuals with alcohol dependence are treated with a combination of various psychosocial methods and medications. Four approved medications are available.
Semaglutide is a long-acting substance that patients only need to take once a week. This is the first medication to act on the GLP-1 receptor that can be taken in tablet form.
In the study, alcohol-dependent rats were treated with semaglutide, which significantly reduced their alcohol consumption and even reduced the drinking of alcohol in conjunction with relapses. Relapses comprise a major problem for individuals with alcohol dependence, as an individual who has abstained from alcohol for a period relapses and drinks more than before the withdrawal.
"There are differences in conducting studies on animals and humans. However, in this case, there is a previous study on humans in which an older version of the diabetes medications that act on GLP-1 was found to reduce alcohol intake in overweight individuals with alcohol dependence," says Elisabet Jerlhag.
The study also examined why the medication reduces alcohol drinking. The results indicate that reduced alcohol-induced reward could be a contributing factor. In the study, semaglutide affected the brain's reward system in mice, to be more exact the nucleus accumbens area of the brain, which is part of the limbic system.

The drug is available today.
Cool. Weight loss AND cuts too much boozing.
I find the drug free method to reduce alcohol consumption very effective. Avoid the news and leftists of all sorts and you won’t be driven to drink. It’s also helpful not having a crazy wife.
Why not just reduce the number of times you go to the bar or the number of bottles you buy at the liquor store by half?
With the way they are promoting it I get the impression it is going to be a doozy.
Maybe it makes you vote democrat!
Covers another recent injection death rate with a noise signal?
Not as easy as popping a pill. But it does work. I keep it in the cabinets and in the fridge. But I quit. I still desire it.
I’m sure it’s “safe and effective”.
If you want to drink, you will. If you don’t, you won’t. For normal drinkers, the drug may work, but not for addicts.
” For normal drinkers, the drug may work, but not for addicts.”
It worked for addicted mice.
“I’m sure it’s “safe and effective”.”
I bet it’s healthy also. It rhymes with Olympic.
It comes in four flavors: Summer Strawberry Ozempic, Winter watermelon Ozempic, Spring Starfruit Ozempic and last Fall Fuji Ozempic. Ozempics all year long.
They aren’t injecting it instead?
Great. Let’s make the shortage worse.
Or one could just stop drinking
Probably no small part of how people lose weight.
I know a guy who used a related drug after a divorce, along with testosterone replacement and serious weight training and walking.
He lost 80lbs in a year. Looks great.
Says he lost 280lbs of dead weight from the divorce.
I know his wife, too. I agree.
Three beers is 900 calories.
You don’t have to be a drunk to get fat from drinking.
You just have to be bored.
Clearly you have never been a drinker.
Its easier said than done.
I realized that I needed to stop drinking at age 30. But didn’t stop until age 40. Went on the wagon many times.
I had to change cities, lose my drinking buddies and find Jesus in order to stop drinking. All hard but necessary things for me to do.
Totally agree. The problem goes away if you just stop drinking. You can also lose a lot of weight if you just eat less and avoid sugar and refined carbs. No problem. Right?
.
Just “put the plug in the jug”?
