San Francisco spice lovers swipe Sriracha from restaurants as beloved condiment’s prices skyrocket to $30

San Francisco Sriracha lovers are swiping bottles of the once-cheap condiment from local restaurants as a last resort amid the national chili pepper shortage.

Bay Area eateries are struggling to keep bottles of the hot sauce on their tables thanks to customers who can’t find Sriracha at any grocery store.

“They literally disappear,” Mariel Edwards, the operations manager of Oakland-based Senor Sisig’s, told SFGATE, calling the thefts “crazy.”

“We haven’t seen people take them, but there is a bottle that will go missing … It’s funny how, like, they’ll just not be on the table anymore.”

Other customers with arguably stronger morals have also called the establishment and asked whether they could buy bottles from the shop directly, Edwards said.

Most major grocery chains in the Bay Area ran out of their Sriracha stock last month in the wake of a chili pepper inventory shortage, creating a wild demand that has led shopkeepers to raise prices a whopping 651%, SFGATE reported.

LOL, I have a large bottle of unopened Sriracha in the kitchen. Wonder what I could get for it on EBay?

My brother lives out where Sriracha is manufactured, fortunately far enough away that he doesn’t get the fumes from the cooking process - as others around the factory do. Locals around in neighborhood wanted it shut down b/c the fumes from cooking the chilis set off asthma, allergies and other breathing problems. Apparently, the company brings in a lot of $$ to the city so they agreed to put in filters.

Why can’t they make a version of Sriracha that’s hot?

Let’s not all jump to conclusions here. This is probably not thievery, but a variation on the missing sock phenomenon. You know, you put 10 socks in the dryer and only 9 come out.

Can’t find Siracha or Sambal Oelek on shelves around here in Va. The big chain supermarkets and the indy asian markets don’t have it. I wondered what the heck was going on.

For some reason they don’t seem to be posting prices for Huy Fong sriracha on Amazon. I’ve got about 2 1/2 17-oz bottles on hand still from the last sriracha scare, so no worries. We don’t use a whole lot of it, but it is necessary for making jerky.

They can have the Sriracha. I’ve got a gallon jug of Frank’s Red Hot sauce, and I’m perfectly happy.

I have one in the pantry but forgot about it and recently opened a hot sauce bottle instead. Salsa isn’t as hot but still works. Either way hot is all the same to me.

Walmart hasn’t had sriracha for a couple years but the grocery store has it for $4. Californians can steal 237 bottles before going over their $950 free theft limit.

Make nachos with sweetened siracha, mozzarella and tortilla chips. It’s a different taste but good.

I knew there had to be something that appreciated in value during the Biden regime.

I paid less than four bucks for the bottle that I have.

SF where Sriracha addicts pay more for their addiction than Fentanyl users do for theirs.

San Francisco where the hot sauce is expensive and the Fentanyl is cheap.

Why can’t they make a version of Sriracha that’s hot?

Flying Goose sriracha made with yellow chile is hotter than most. I got some at a local Korean market.

“Why can’t they make a version of Sriracha that’s hot?”

Its not supposed to be “hot.” Its supposed to be spicy.
