A US Navy anti-aircraft system was spotted training its sights on a passenger plane in the sky as sailors laughed and pleaded for the machine to change its seeming course.
The military MK 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapon System tracked the aircraft with its powerful six-barrel 20mm cannon as crew members shouted 'no, no, no' as if it was a misbehaving dog.
It followed the passenger plane, believed to be a Boeing 737, for a few seconds before it powered down and lowered its weapon to the relief of the sailors.
A video of the shocking moment was shared on the social media platform X in May and has so far been viewed almost 3million times.
The MK 15 Phalanx is a powerful weapon that is designed to defend military ships automatically against incoming threats such as aircrafts, missiles and small boats and can fire up to 4,500 rounds per minute.

TWA 800..................
What were the sailors doing hanging out around an autonomous anti-aircraft gun--weren't there any drag shows in the galley that day?
Meh...yah gotta do something to amuse yourself out on the boat...long cruises suck.
Oh damn! Did they have that tech back then? Pierre Salenger said it was friendly fire.
First of all, since this was the Navy, it very well could be that the "passenger 737" was actually a Navy P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft, and this was part of an exercise for the ship's CIC.
Second of all, if the CWIS was armed, sailors would not be allowed on deck at all. So the fact that the sailors were filming and joking indicates the weapon was not armed, and if that was a civilian 737 it was in no danger.
When they put weapons systems under the control of artificial intelligence does that mean that the system will operate on its own and not take orders from mere humans?
I’m sorry Dave, I can’t do that.
What happens when ALL the AI’s on the PLANET link up together?.....................
800 indeed.
Hub said never happen a bunch of navy guys could keep it quiet. His immediate theory was reflected in Nelson demilles nightfall.
yep, twa 800 is exactly the same case. Of course when they accidentally shoot it down they will totally cover it up.
I was part of the team at General Dynamics Pomona that built the 1st 300 of them
It is made to search, find, track, AND COMPUTE IF A THREAT, TO SHOOT IT DOWN.
Yes, it will track a questionable target, and once the target’s track goes away from the ship, to ztand down.

TWA was over 13,000 feet. This weapon doesn’t have that kind of range. Besides the friendly fire theory has been debunked many times.
What’s the effective range of Phalanx? A commercial jet at cruising altitude is not “Close In”
Wow! I know about the phalanx but I never heard about that. Yikes. I don’t know whether that is funny or sad. I guess being former military makes me smirk but I’m a bad boy and can’t help it. Thanks for that nugget.
Outstanding book...I really like Nelson Demille.
