Connecticut High School Student Dies Suddenly After Collapsing at Football Practice

Elijah-Jay Mariano Rivera, a student at Windsor High School in Connecticut, died suddenly on Tuesday after suffering a medical emergency during his team’s football practice, according to local officials.

Details regarding the cause of death are not yet known, but the Windsor community is left mourning the loss of the 15-year-old, known to his teammates as “Big Texas,” reports CT Insider.

Rivera and his family had just moved to town last June from Texas, “so he could better focus on school and football,” said his mother, Chastity Hernandez.

“He was the most kind-hearted boy,” she added. “He was a gentle giant.”

Hernandez said her son enjoyed cars and football, and had aspirations of one day playing in the NFL for his favorite team: the Atlanta Falcons.

Officials reported Rivera lost consciousness during practice while he was not “engaged in any football drills or tackling,” according to an email sent to the Windsor Public Schools community.

When EMTs arrived on the scene, they performed CPR before transporting Rivera to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, where he died some time later, officials said.

Windsor High School and Sage Park Middle School made crisis teams available for students on Wednesday.

“As a community, we want to keep his family in our thoughts and prayers, and support them moving forward however we can,” the school said in a statement.

Claribel Rosario, another parent at Windsor High, called Rivera’s death a “heartbreaking loss to the community.”

I wonder what could have caused this ?

Maybe Lack of Sleep, or perhaps too much homework ?

And the families never say ONE WORD about what could have caused this.

Not much to do in Connecticut and, unlike Texas, there are very few distractions. Connecticut has all the best football schools. A hell of a lot better than Texas. For those not focusing on football, if you move to CT, always take something with you to do.

“And the families never say ONE WORD about what could have caused this.”

Because the families cannot face the dread reality that they were party to the murder of their child.

How “Big” was Big Texas? That might have been a factor.

Perfectly normal. This happens every day. Usually several times a day, actually. Hardly news anymore, it’s so common. Scientists are baffled why, except they know for sure that it most certainly isn’t that one thing.

For a long tome, way before the vax and Covid, I have questioned the wisdom of pushing young athletes as hard as they do these days with the growing popularity and money for high school sports.
