The Office 365 at one of my work computers will soon expire.
Office 365 Family for 6 devices is about $99
Office 365 Business for 1 device is about $150
It is tempting to get Office Family (less money and works with more computers) but if I do, will Microsoft bust me and send me to the gulag?
The other temptation is to work with Open Office. Any experience with that?
If I do not respond tonight, it is because I retire and rise super early.
But I've never used MS Office, so I can't compare it to that.
Libra Office is pretty good.
Libre Office is great. And free. And it’s not microsoft.
Libre Office (a version of Open Office) is on par with Microsoft Office.
I’ve written a couple of books using Libre Office.
If the office apps are why you are paying for Office 365, then you should switch to Libre Office.
Microsoft 365 also comes with OneDrive & 1 GB backup for each user, which is not a bad deal as a backup system.
I have used Open Office for years and never had an issue.

I can only say that I prefer non-subscription software that comes on DVDs. I prefer Microsoft Office because of Word and Outlook. I recently installed a copy of 2016 Office which had a hiccup of some sort, so I chose to repair it online. However, Microsoft didn’t repair it, it wiped it out and replaced it with 365. Definitely did not appreciate my calendar with bill due dates disappearing. There was no indication that 365 was going to hijack what I now have to reinstall.
I also use Open Office which is similar enough but doesn’t have an email element. The Writer part seems to work well enough for my purposes which don’t require bells or whistles either.
As a part-time adjunct college professor, I have a .edu e-mail address, and Office 365 as a fringe benefit.
A few years ago, I stepped on my Word 2000 CD ROM, so I’ve had to do without that masterpiece of software on my Win 7 and Win 10 computers. :(
I use Libre Office a lot more than Office 365.
The spouse is hardcore Microsoft.
I stopped paying for MS Office three years ago. I use LibreOffice. The transition wasn’t too bad, it reads/writes all MS Office formats. There are some challenges with Fonts but those have been workable for me. YMMV.
Their up dates move features around and change the color blue they use for all buttons....

I use Office 365 Family. I hated it when they moved to a subscription model like so many companies have done, but $100 / year for five licenses is a bargain.
I use a Mac, so there’s no Access (MS has never released Access on a Mac OS). I dabbled with LibreOffice for the Mac but found it a pain in the neck compared to FileMaker (now WAY too expensive with their subscription model) and I don’t want to futz around with a Virtual Machine, Parallels, Windows, etc.
I like Libre Office too. You can save in MS formats (Word, Excel, etc.). I can email documents to others not using Libre, and they work.
my emails are a whole other thing...so I do not need Microsoft Office for emails, or even for back up
As some others have mentioned, Libre Office is pretty good too [it's free].
Does Open Office talk to or communicate with Microsoft Office 365?
My co-workers use 365 and they need to read the spreadsheets that I generate.
