When I was a kid, I actually had to use an outhouse, when visiting relatives and parent's friends.

I know in the Army, cleaning an out house was called "Latrine duty"

You can always go with a 5 gal bucket and a toilet seat lid. Just place it behind a bush for privacy.

My uncle immigrated to Philadelphia from Estonia. He never quite understood people $hitting in the house, paying for water, or keeping a refrigerator.

Outhouse, well, and root cellar, were on his first "things to get done" list.

Best meals ever. Cleanest, neatest house ever. Nice cold well water. Always something to do.

We built an outhouse at our hunting shack. Just dug a 6’ hole, plug a slab of concrete on top with a hole for the toilet and one for a vent. Put an RV toilet on it and a vent pipe (and of course a small structure around it)

I kept a jar of water in there (had a spigot) for washing hands, caught the water in a bowl. That water went into the toilet bowl for the next person. Great setup, really, except walking out there in the cold lol

Same here. And I remember everyone pitching in to lift and move an oak two-holer when it was retired. Damned heavy.

Outhouse? Who needs an outhouse? Just move to San Francisco.

Some flaws in the article. There is a sink but no plumbing for it. If you are going to install a sink, might as well put a water tank on the roof and then you can have a flush toilet and even a shower inside (does not need to be a hot water shower).

I am planning on using the local cemetery where democrats are buried. (And still voting)

Justin Castreau could use one. Instead, he prefers to sh/$ all over Canadians, especially Christians and Albertans, in particular.

My family in rural Georgia didn’t get indoor restrooms until 1974. Man, those things stunk.

The stink isn't the problem. It's the wasps and spiders. My mother once found a rattler inside when she was a kid.

Where do you go to "take care of business" in SF?

My BIL told me when he was in Vietnam the local farmers would set up “honey buckets” along the roads they patrolled. The troops had convenient places to go, and the farmers had a free source of fertilizer 🙂🙂😉

I grew up in a neighborhood in Nashville that didn’t get indoor plumbing until the VERY late 80’s.

My grandmother’s house faced this side street, but right next door was a garage that faced the main street. The garage had indoor plumbing, but for my grandmother’s property it was unavailable. (Her house was built in 1923 or so). And the garage building was closer to her side street than she was. HALF the street had access to natural gas, but the rest didn’t. It made NO SENSE.

Yes, outdoor pit toilets stink, and the smell soaks into your clothes if you’re in there for too long. (I was 14 when we moved away, so I remember them well).

We didn’t have an outhouse. We had a shovel and 30 acres of trees to fertilize.
