Shortage of mini milk cartons hits school lunchrooms in Pa., elsewhere

The tiny, half-pint cartons of milk served with millions of school lunches nationwide may soon be scarce in some cafeterias, leaving districts across the country scrambling to find alternatives.

The problem is not a shortage of milk itself, but the cardboard cartons used to package and serve it, according to dairy industry suppliers and state officials.

Pactiv Evergreen of Lake Forest, Illinois, which bills itself as “the leading manufacturer of fresh food and beverage packaging in North America” acknowledged in a statement Friday that it “continues to face significantly higher than projected demand” for its milk cartons.

When I was in school we had 1/3 pint glass bottles and waxed paper straws.
On an aside comment...Starbucks sells stainless steel straws.
Could do some serious damage in a street fight.

The lunchroom ladies.

But as also pointed out, better still is a thermos of milk sent from home with lunch.

There’s still plenty of packaging, but stick to meats, eggs, dairy and fruit (veggies from the garden) and it’s at least better.

To be honest, I only remember having milk in kindergarten. I think from first grade on everyone packed a thermos in their lunch box. I can still vaguely remember the smell of the thermos after spending half a day unrefrigerated.just think of how wildly unsafe things were back then. Egg and tuna salad left at room temperature and just about every kid ate deadly peanut butter sandwiches.

We had no lunch room. Most went home for lunch. The rest packed lunch.

Our workplace just instituted a free breakfast for the line workers.
Day 1 all the cereal, and milk was gone. It was stashed in their locker's to be taken home to feed their kids. 😂

China has had to halt the production of milk cartons because they’re running short on melamine. It’s an integral part of the waterproof coating on the inside of the carton.

How about pouring it out of stainless steel jugs into individual cups or glasses?

Are the water fountains broken?

Check and see if the prisons and jails are getting them. When I was an officer in NY State’s prison system 20 years ago. Inmates got two cartons of milk in the morning, and evening. I highly doubt they are withholding milk from the convicts. They don’t want riots on their hands.

How about parents feed their own damn kids.

YES! And they should also get their little buggers to and from the schoolhouse so we can get those yellow menaces off the streets.

Half of these unopened cartons are returned unused and are prohibited from being distributed to charities.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Why should I have to pay so someone else’s brat can get free milk?

60 years ago, it wasn’t in single serve containers. It was dispensed into heavy duty re-usable plastic glasses. But that was before the green revolution.”

When I was in second grade in CA 60 years ago, there was nothing other than what we brought in our Lone Ranger lunch box, with thermos.

Baloney & cheese sammich, banana or apple, and chips was the most common fare, with that little thermos of milk.

LOL!!!!!!!!! I still have similar for lunch.

AS thermos with some milk from home could slosh down a nice packed lunch.

And breakfast should be eaten before leaving home.

Most of the dairies have gone to plastic single serve bottles. They have longer shelf life and plastic is cheaper than paper or aluminum.
