Russia lost a dozen elite marines when they cooked food on an open fire and triggered an explosion from nearby live ammunition.

Eight more were wounded in the incident that Vladimir Putin's regime has sought to cover-up.

Reports say a RPG-7 grenade launcher shell caught fire and exploded at Kuzminsky military training ground in Rostov region, bordering Ukraine.

Eight of the marines from 155th Separate Guards Marine Brigade, based in Vladivostok, were killed on the spot.

Four more died in hospital, said the News 166 outlet in Rostov, which said the humiliating tragedy had been confirmed by three independent sources.

'About 20 people from [the marine brigade] lit a fire next to stocks of ammunition during their lunch break. An RPG-7 grenade launcher shell rolled into the fire and exploded,' 161.ru quoted one government source as saying.

The troops were believed to be due for deployment to Putin's illegal war in Ukraine.

All of those killed were said to have been marines from the Primorye region of Russia.

The dead and wounded from the lunchtime cookout have not been named.

A major criminal case has been launched into a suspected breach of safety regulations.

The commander of the Pacific Fleet Admiral Viktor Liina, 55, Pacific fleet commander, has visited the training base to read the riot act over the blunder, it was reported.

Neither the Russian defence ministry nor the Investigative Committee has commented on the fiasco.

A serviceman who witnessed the horror revealed details but it has taken since it occurred on 3 November to verify the details.

MailOnline was unable to verify the details of the Russian reports.

“...A major criminal case has been launched into a suspected breach of safety regulations...”

Slightly off topic:

I was reading the diary of a WWII US officer who talked about a vet who contacted him years after the war, to follow up on a decoration he had been promised and didn't receive. The officer who promised him the medal had been killed in an accident.

During a behind the lines event at a US field kitchen, someone dropped a grenade (safety had been forgotten and left off) in a crowded kitchen area. About 18 guys died immediately and many others were injured badly...including the guy who asked about the promise of a medal. He lost vision in one eye and I think he lost a leg, along with other injuries.

The officer who got the post war request to research the medal story proceeded to check things out.

The vet HAD been injured at the WWII field kitchen accident. BUT it turns out HE was the GI who made the ‘mistake’ with his grenade...and caused the deaths of so many, including the officer who had promised the medal.

Aren't people something?

I remember 5 guys getting killed in P/R when a short 81mm round landed between them on a training exercise. Plenty of those accidents happen during training and even more during actual war.

Have you noticed the Russians are stupid, incompetent and cowards running away gets louder the more Ukraine starts to lose on the Battlefield? Pro Russian Youtube articles vanish as videos get recycled from last year touting victories like the sinking of the Moscow warchip? Just wait—winter will not be easy for Ukraine.
