Warming up your electric car's battery with a toaster is a bad idea. Yes, someone tried this.

My father-in-law paid for college in North Dakota with an old pickup and an industrial battery, jump-starting dead cars in the winter for 20 bucks a jump.

In the era of electric vehicles, maybe someone needs to come up with a smart alternative, unlike this EV owner in Denmark. 👇

PIX11 News @PIX11News · Follow A toaster placed under an electric vehicle to warm up its battery likely caused a fire that destroyed the car and damaged a nearby house in Denmark, police said,

Toasters apparently get a little too warm and can set the car on fire.

Yep, a Denmark EV owner put a toaster under his car battery to warm it up while the vehicle was sitting in a carport.

The carport was connected to a house.

The house also caught on fire.

"The cause of the fire is most likely to be found in the toaster that the owner of the car had placed under the front of his car to keep the battery warm," police said in a daily report.

No one was inured in the blaze, but the car was destroyed, and while the reports don't mention it, I'm pretty sure breakfast was also ruined in the incident.

The car's owner is facing a fine, but really, having to eat eggs without toast should be punishment enough.

There’s no indication of the make or model of the Danish EV that died by toaster, but statistically speaking it probably wouldn’t have burned down had it not been for the incorrectly used small appliances. While EVs do work better with warm batteries, it just isn’t worth the risk to try warming them with anything other than parking them in a garage. The battery will still function cold, albeit with reduced range.

Didn’t people sometimes use incandescent light bulbs for this?

I think it was said by Albert Einstein when asked about the difference between genius and stupidity. He said
(paraphrasing) “ Genius has it’s limitations whereas human stupidity has no bounds and is infinite.”

Einstein would not have included that redundancy. :-)

That’s around a kilowatt hour of electricity every hour. Ev’s are so efficient.

Why would someone use a plug in toaster when propane soldering torches are cheap and portable?

What do you want to bet that in China, North Korea, etc they force slaves to use their body heat to warm the EV batteries of the elite tyrants. If the battery leaks, fails, burns......well......there are always more slaves in the workers paradise.

If they were dumb enough to buy an EV then I’m not surprised that they tried to warm it up with a toaster ... actually I’m surprised they didn’t try a flamethrower or propane torch.

All the folks who had the levels of intelligence to purchase EVs are putting candles under their cars to warm them now.

I don’t buy the explanation. Toasters don’t get that hot outside the heating elements.

I know people who have thawed frozen cars with a charcoal fire under the engine.
