Browsing through social media but never liking or commenting on posts may be a sign of a mental health condition, a new study has revealed.
Researchers at the Central China Normal University found that people who use platforms 'passively' are more likely suffer from social anxiety compared to people who use it actively - uploading posts and sharing life updates.
The team surveyed more than 500 college students on their mental health and social media use, finding that 'voyeurs' were more afraid of unfamiliar situations in their physical lives.
On the other hand, those who used social media actively found they had more social support and improved friendship quality.
The study, published in BMC Psychology, included 571 students from Shanxi Province and Hubei Province in China from May to July 2022.
The group completed questionnaires measuring openness, active and passive social media use, self-evaluation and social anxiety.
To measure openness, subjects were asked to rank a series of statements: one for strongly disagreed to four for strongly agreed.
These statements included: 'I see myself as someone who is inventive' and 'I see myself as someone who has an active imagination.'
The next measurement, active and passive social media use, was a nine-item questionnaire that asked how much they post, such as status updates, likes and comments.
The study noted that 'active use refers to information-generating behaviors that enhance communication, such as posting status updates or comments.

Dr. Woo Kuco said “Our research has shown that for normal mental health one should post numerous TikTok videos where the subject is stealing cars. Greater development can be found by posting carjackings or running over pedestrians.
Optimal mental health is obtained when one posts photos of their mutilated genitalia and other body parts.”
BTW - some Chinese person said those types of TikTok videos aren’t shown in China!
ChiCom government wants every Chinee citizen to comment so they have a database on everyone to use as leverage when needed.
I have a Youtube channel, tho mot so many ctreayed lately. I have some subscriptions there, amd I do post comments at will, as I do here.
I do not visit any other social media siye. They will rot your brain.
I comment there sometimes, but most times they don’t show up.

(People who write for the Daily Male HAVE an irreversible, serious mental health condition.)
It’s a steady job.
But.....
Hear that lurkers?
Back in my parent’s day, most people would read the newspaper and not write the editor. They would comment to each other face-to-face. So much more civilized than hiding behind a keyboard.
I am going to post meaningless drivel to ease my social anxiety.
So if I read the paper but never wrote a letter to the editor, same thing??
What nonsense.
How is not responding to social media any different than reading a newspaper and not having an audience to listen to your opinion on what you read.
I always respond to articles, because I know I’m always going to be proven right!
:)
Another bizarre opinion story.
exactly
how can they tally your social credit score if you do not participate
Even if they had written to the editor, it wouldn't make it through. The letters to the editor were written by the newspaper and used as an extension of the propaganda, designed to make readers feel they needed to get on board with the "correct" thinking.
Bingo, but I always found those heavily into social media were of average intelligence at best.
Sounds like some little girl gets her feelings hurt if people don’t compliment her on her stupid posts.
What would one expect from a 20-something little long haired Twinkie? That’s probably all she does is to present her ideas in response to the Web that “calls out to her for an answer.”
“...compared to people who use it actively - uploading posts and sharing life updates.”
In other words, compared to the mental cases who feel the need to broadcast and glamourize/manipulate every detail of their life to others, then be applauded and liked by others...
