The leader of this movement, a Black professor at the University of Michigan by the name of April Baker-Bell, has sponsored a document to abolish what she calls “White Mainstream English.” She believes that Black students who are forced to write their papers in mainstream English are victims of Anti-Black Racism.
Learning is rarely easy or painless. But always reaps benefits that far out weigh that pain.
Learning standard English opens opportunities for further learning from the great minds of the past in literature, science and history.
This is just another college professor trying to justify her place in academia by reopening a storefront in the grievance industry.
Those that follow her down this rabbit hole are condemning the children that they teach to a life of mediocrity
What is often forgotten in this line of reasoning is that colloquial English is highly regional and constantly changing.
Standard English gives us a common language that we can all understand over vast areas. Without it we devolve in to chaos where words vary in meaning from place to place and misunderstandings can lead to tragic ends.
Also language to a certain extent dictates our thinking, reasoning and logic. How we speak is how we think. Regimentation in speech is regimentation in thought.
If you can’t speak clearly you probably can’t think clearly and you certainly can’t understood clearly
I have a friend who is an English professor at a local university, and he teaches a very popular course that teaches about the many English languages we use. Ebonics is part of that curriculum, and he is heavily interested in this. So they aren’t kidding when they talk or write about this. It is being taught.
We’re living through Idiocracy. Someday, people will study Mike Judge the way Nostradamus was studied.

The sad part of that scenario is that in real life, more often than not if one encounters a black man with a White female companion the female usually looks like she took third place in an Iowa hog judging contest. Harsh I know, but ...
Anyway I think that tide may be turning a bit. I have seen a few commercials recently that were remakes of commercials from a while back that feature normal couples and even a few that (gasp) feature all Whites! I was glad to be sitting down at that time ...
Things will be easier for blacks if they gain rapport with whites rather than opposing them and resisting them. One way to gain rapport with whites is to talk/speak like them.
Exactly right. By advocating for Black English this way it really will hold these folks back.
Most grammatical features of Black English are also present in southern/rural/working class white English. I don’t see anyone arguing that this group should insist on writing their papers in poor south Mississippi dialect.
It happens in retail, too. Years ago, I worked in retail. They gave nice incentives for pretty much doing your job. As soon as they set a specific monthly goal, I would meet it and then be rewarded. My store would have several incentives going on at the same time. Pretty soon, I was winning all the extras, but really, I just did my job. I wasn’t a slacker. After a while, they got rid of the incentives, because I was often the only one winning them. So they just stopped them altogether.
Examining it as a phenomenon of language is different than actually doing it yourself.

One of the reason Indians are successful, is they all learn English. There are literally a thousand languages spoken in India. Most Indians here can only communicate with each other in English.

Apparently, ‘bruh’ is a new word that is a major part of the ebonics language.
My sister did the word jumble in yesterday’s paper and the couple in the comic was a white man and black woman.
If Blacks aspired to achieve economic parity with their compatriots, then they would have to become bilingual.
