Problems with a constipated cat (or dog)? Here's a solution. (vanity)

Posted on 12/30/2023 12:45:02 PM PST by RoosterRedux

One of my cats had a lot of trouble with constipation. She would spend much time just hanging around the littlebox with no success.

The vet recommended mineral oil mixed with food, but that didn't work. I tried squirting it into her mouth with a needleless syringe. That's was difficult for a whole bunch of reasons...and she hid when she needed it most.

But Happy Days Are Here Again.

I found a solution that works like a charm and thought that some of you pet people might like to consider it.

I mix a 1/4 teaspoon of generic non-flavored Miralax (an osmotic laxative) into a packet of Friskies Lil' Gravies. She laps it right up. And results follow shortly.

As a side note, I started with just a little bit of generic Miralax (1/8+/- teaspoon) and continued for a few days increasing the dosage a little each day. The Miralax draws water into the intestines and softens stools gently.

Anyway, just in case anyone has a constipitated cat...

Might work with many other animals, but I would check with my vet first.

Hairball meds were hit or miss in that they didn’t work for serious constipation. Good for hairballs though (I use Vaseline for that).

LOL. I hadn’t thought of that. I could fly her down to Cancun for the real thing.

Did it work? I stir it into the liquid really well because, well, she’s a cat and naturally very picky. Any hint of medicine and it’s game over.

Mathematicians know how to solve this problem without drugs.

We use Miralax for our older male cat. We mix, as do you, 1/4 tsp with his food. Before this he was having a terrible time. Now he has no trouble in the box.

I take it too, so I had plenty on hand for Mollie (the cat).

I guess giving a constipated dog
cooked hamburger with prune slices might be too effective. Then you’ll have the opposite problem.

Now Fluffy is hooked. Miss the feline fix by just one day and watch out...

As someone who suffers from chronic constipation I can attest that Miralax does work..been taking it for 5 yrs now..my nephew is 3 and he gets constipated so my sister gives him miralax as well works well doesn’t work right away but taking it everyday a few times a day does the trick

Yep. Seemed to work. It’s supposed to be tasteless, but I’ve had cats, so I get it.

I can’t work out how they’d do that?

Agreed. I take a little bit every day unless I go on a really high-fiber binge.

As you probably know, the generic is significantly less expensive and is identical.

Just the opposite with my kitty. It’s not parasites or anything like that. Just a very sensitive stomach. Anyone have a remedy for that?
