President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a phone call with Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.
The interlocutors extended New Year’s greetings to each other and discussed the issue of bolstering the security of Ukraine, which has once again been subjected to a massive air attack by Russia over the past two days.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed Justin Trudeau about the consequences of Russian strikes with missiles and “Shahed” drones targeting Ukrainian cities and villages. Civilian infrastructure was damaged in Sumy, Odesa, Lviv, Kyiv, and Poltava regions. There are dead and wounded civilians, including children. On New Year’s Eve alone, Ukraine’s air defense forces destroyed over 80 “Shahed” drones.
The President of Ukraine thanked the Prime Minister of Canada for his willingness to help strengthen Ukraine’s sky shield, in particular by supplying additional NASAMS systems and missiles.
The parties also discussed work on security guarantees. They decided that the Ukrainian and Canadian teams would intensify bilateral dialogue shortly to reach an agreement.
The interlocutors also paid attention to the preparation of the fourth meeting of national security advisors and political advisors to the heads of state in the framework of implementing the Ukrainian Peace Formula. The meeting will take place in mid-January in Davos, Switzerland. Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Justin Trudeau and Canada for supporting Ukraine’s efforts at the global level.
In addition, the Head of State expressed gratitude for Canada’s readiness to continue defense and financial support for Ukraine in 2024. Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that our state highly appreciates every manifestation of support from Canada.

Day 677 of the Russian full-scale military aggression against Ukraine continues.
The enemy continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, conducts strikes, and attacks both military and civilian targets. The enemy is actively using tactical aircraft and FPV quadcopters, conducting assault operations with the support of armored vehicles, and has increased the number of air strikes.
During the day of January 1, there were 56x combat engagements. The enemy launched a total of 1x missile and 81x air strikes, including strikes with Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs, carried out 37x MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Private residential and apartment buildings, and other civilian and industrial infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.
Today, Russian occupiers have once again attacked Ukraine with 10x Shahed-136/131 UAVs. Ukrainian Defense Forces destroyed 9x enemy UAVs.
The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.
VOLYN and POLISSYA AXIS: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.
SIVERSHCHYNA and SLOBOZHANSHCHYNA AXIS: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. The invaders launched air strikes in the vicinities of Mala Vovcha and Okhrimivka (Kharkiv oblast). More than 25x settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Leonivka (Chernihiv oblast), Znob-Trubchevska, Seredyna-Buda, Bachivsk (Sumy oblast), Kozacha Lopan, Vovchansk, Budarky (Kharkiv oblast).
KUPYANSK AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 7x attacks in the vicinity of Synkivka and east of Petropavlivka (Kharkiv oblast), where the occupiers, with air support, made unsuccessful attempts to break through Ukrainian defense. The occupiers launched air strikes near Kucherivka, Cherneshchyna (Kharkiv oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).
LYMAN AXIS: the enemy conducted no offensives. The occupiers launched air strikes in the area of Serebryanske forestry (Luhansk oblast) and near Terny, Spirne (Donetsk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Serebryanka, Spirne, Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).
BAKHMUT AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 10x attacks in the vicinities of Bohdanivka, Klishchiivka and Andriivka (Donetsk oblast). More than 10x settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, Andriivka (Donetsk oblast).
AVDIIVKA AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 4x enemy attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka, and 14x more attacks in the vicinities of Pervomaiske and Nevelske (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the enemy, with air support, conducted unsuccessful attempts to improve his tactical situation. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Berdychi, Stepove, Avdiivka, Sjeverne, Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast).
MARYINKA AXIS: the adversary conducted no offensives. The occupiers launched air strikes in the vicinities of Maryinka and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). The settlements of Heorhiivka, Pobjeda, Novomykhailivka, Kostyantynivka were under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.
SHAKHTARSKE AXIS: the adversary conducted no offensives. The invaders launched air strikes near Staromaiorske and Velyka Novosilka (Donetsk oblast). The adversary fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Urozhaine (Donetsk oblast).
ZAPORIZHZHIA AXIS: the adversary made unsuccessful attempts to regain lost ground in the vicinity of Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 3x assaults in the area. More than 25x settlements, including Poltavka, Chervone, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Pyatykhatky (Zaporizhzhia oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.
ODESA operational-strategic group, KHERSON AXIS: the adversary fired artillery at the settlements of Novokairy, Veletenske and Kherson (Kherson oblast).
The occupiers do not abandon their intention to drive Ukrainian units out of their footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro. Thus, during the day, the enemy made 18x unsuccessful assaults. The Ukrainian troops are holding the line and keep inflicting significant losses on the enemy.
During the day of January 1, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 13x concentrations of troops of the occupiers. Also, air defense forces shot down 1x Kh-59 air-launched guided missile.
The Ukrainian missile troops hit 1x concentration of troops, weapons, and military equipment, 6x artillery systems, 3x air defense systems, and 1x command post of the russian invaders.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis believes the West is on the verge of repeating historical mistakes by supporting Ukraine insufficiently in its fight against Russian aggression and has warned against waiting for a “Pearl Harbour effect”.
“For nearly 25 years we have been kicking the can down the road, trying to contain Putin’s imperialism with dialogue and diplomacy while he continues to ignore borders and flatten cities,” the official stressed.
Landsbergis pointed out that the Minsk Agreements had provided a pause after Russia’s hybrid aggression against Ukraine in 2014 but actually only postponed the war to the future. Tomorrow always comes. The problem of Russia’s imperialism didn’t disappear in 2014, and to most eastern flankers it was clear that the next phase of the invasion would be costlier and deadlier. And so it was. When Russia attacked again, the war suddenly became today’s problem. Again we think we can solve it by making it tomorrow’s problem. But the premise has not changed. Russia’s imperialist revanchist ambitions will remain,” the Lithuanian Foreign Minister stressed. Gabrielius Landsbergis stressed that the next phase of the hot war might be directed not only against Ukraine, Georgia or Moldova but also against a NATO country, and the cost of repelling such aggression would be even higher.
“We could wait for what I have called the ‘Pearl Harbour effect’, a moment in history when the problems of tomorrow finally become the problems of today, but at an enormously inflated price. Or we could treat this as today’s problem and start solving it today.
“We are on the verge of repeating historic mistakes. I am convinced that if we won’t defeat Russia now, that means our chosen path is to suffer unimaginable and unnecessary losses before we eventually decide it’s time to step up and win”, he added.

Electricity surplus in the power system recorded, a coal mine in Donetsk region cut off power due to shelling
POWER GENERATION AND CONSUMPTION
A surplus of electricity was recorded in the power system. Ukraine transferred the surplus to neighbouring Poland (from 11:00 to 13:00). The total volume was 600 MWh.
A thermal power plant unit was taken out of service for short-term repairs.
The electricity generated by Ukrainian power plants is sufficient to meet the needs of consumers.
There are 8 units in reserve that can be put into operation as needed. The power system is balanced. The situation is under control. No blackout schedules are applied.
CONSEQUENCES OF THE SHELLING
As a result of shelling of a thermal power plant in Donetsk region, 110 kV overhead lines were de-energised, leaving household consumers and the TPP’s own needs without power, and also a coal mine (with 25 workers) was cut off. Within an hour, the consumers and the mine were reconnected.
In Chernihiv region, a 0.4 kV overhead line was disconnected as a result of shelling, and 96 consumers were cut off from power.
SITUATION AT THE ZNPP
There is a slight decrease in the water level in the cooling pond. It is now at 15.63 metres.
This is enough to meet the needs of the plant.
IMPORT/EXPORT
Electricity imports totalled 11,641 MWh. Electricity exports for 30-31 December amounted to 210 MWh.

American Patriot anti-aircraft systems have downed 15 Russian Kinzhal missiles over Ukraine since 4 May 2023.
Yurii Ihnat, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, said this. “Patriot is able to down ballistic and aeroballistic missiles such as Kinzhal. The first supposedly unrivalled Kinzhal Kh-47 M2 missile was shot down on 4 May. So we started counting on that day. Then there were six more, then another six, and as of now, we have downed 15 Kinzhal missiles using the Patriot system, which is very good news for us.”
Ihnat noted, however, that Ukraine has “few” Patriot systems. “A few batteries are not enough,” he added.
Ihnat also said that Russia has deployed over 7,500 missiles of all types against Ukraine during its full-scale war.
First unveiled by Putin in 2018, the Russian president once dubbed the Kinzhal missiles, also known as “KILLJOY,” as “super weapons” that would be “unkillable.” In a report from last month, the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense noted that the missiles’ actual performance on the battlefield has been “mixed.”
“KILLJOY has almost certainly had a mixed combat debut,” the ministry’s report explained. “Many of its launches have likely missed their intended targets, while Ukraine has also succeeded in intercepting attacks by this supposedly ‘undefeatable’ system.”
To assess the reality of claimed “massive Russian casualties” look at vehicle losses for Russia compared for the same period last year.

The New Year’s Eve in Ukraine passed without any significant violations, but with hostile attacks. On the New Year’s Eve, 17 shelling incidents were recorded, killing a 15-year-old boy in Odesa and injuring three people in Odesa region.
As a result of the attacks, 16 civilian objects were damaged across the country: 8 apartment buildings, 2 private houses, a museum, an educational institution and a hangar. In particular, the city of Lviv was struck, resulting in damage to the museum and university buildings and a fire.
Police officers are recording the aftermath of the enemy attack, collecting evidence of Russian war crimes, interviewing citizens and maintaining law and order.

Russia has intensified efforts to influence the political environment and society in France with the aim of ending Paris’s support for Ukraine, reports The Washington Post.
According to Kremlin documents and interviews with European security officials and far-right political figures, Russia is escalating efforts to undermine support for Ukraine in France.
The Kremlin’s maneuvering and connections with various far-right parties across Europe, including in France, are causing concern among European officials ahead of the upcoming European Parliament elections in June. As noted by the EU’s chief of foreign affairs, Josep Borrell, the upcoming elections could be “as dangerous as American ones.”
According to Kremlin documents, Sergei Kiriyenko, the first deputy chief of Vladimir Putin’s administration, instructed Kremlin political technologists to promote political discord in France through social media and French political figures, opinion leaders, and activists.
“Those figures were not identified by name in the documents seen by The Post. Moscow’s goal is to undermine support for Ukraine and weaken NATO resolve, the documents show. The effort parallels similar interference in Germany, where the Kremlin has attempted to marry the far right and the far left in an antiwar alliance,” The Washington Post explains.
Among the points that Kremlin strategists aim to reinforce are:
Assertions that Western sanctions against Russia have harmed the French economy by reducing trade volumes. They claim that this situation puts the country at risk of the “the deepest social and economic crisis of recent years.” This includes the claim that supplying weapons to Ukraine left France defenseless.
Claims that aim to increase the number of those in France who do not want to “pay for another country’s war.” Additionally, they target those who fear a direct war with Russia and the onset of the Third World War.

For the second time, Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klytschko celebrated the New Year with the soldiers in the hottest spots of the frontline. He came to support them and brought aid.
Vitalii Klytschko posted this on his Facebook page and showed a video, Censor.NET reports. The 92nd Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Kosh Ataman Ivan Sirko also reported on Klytschko’s visit on New Year’s Eve.
“Traditionally, for the second year in a row, I have been meeting with soldiers in Donbas. I visited to congratulate the soldiers who are fighting in the hottest spots of the frontline in eastern Ukraine. I visited 5 military units, talked to them and supported our defenders. We brought them drones (80 FPV and 8 Mavic 3 quadcopters), some other equipment they asked for, chemical warmers, and food,” Vitalii Klytschko said.
He talked to the defenders and told them about their common New Year’s wish.
“We support our soldiers who are fighting heroically in extremely difficult conditions. Without sleep, in the cold and mud, under constant enemy fire. Today they all remembered their families, joked a bit and made one wish. You know what it is! Happy New Year! Let it be a winning one for Ukraine!” - Vitalii Klytschko emphasized.
