More Than 300 People Somehow Survive A Major Airplane Fire After Suspected Midair Crash

All 379 passengers and crew members aboard a Japan Airlines plane, which collided midair with a Coast Guard aircraft Tuesday, survived despite a fiery landing at Tokyo’s Haneda airport.

Five of the six crew members on the Coast Guard plane were killed following the collision shortly before 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Reuters. Only the captain of the Bombardier-built Dash-8 maritime patrol plane has reportedly been found. The crew was reportedly on their way to Niigata airport on Japan’s west coast to deliver aid and resources to survivors of a powerful New Year’s Day earthquake that struck the region, killing at least 48 people and triggering fires, tsunamis and landslides.

“I felt a boom like we had hit something and jerked upward the moment we landed,” one passenger aboard the flight told Kyodo news agency, Reuters reported. “I saw sparks outside the window and the cabin filled with gas and smoke.”

Some 17 people from the Japan Airlines flight were evacuated with injuries, but somehow over 300 people reportedly survived the freak incident. Haneda airport was closed immediately following the crash but is expected to reopen as soon as possible as it is one of two major airports serving Japan’s capital, according to Reuters.

Again, depends on the flight. Seriously: don’t let stereotypes and “America Sux” propaganda cloud your mind. I fly a lot. Some cities, as either origin or destination, tend to crowd the plane with Jabba the Hutt’s relatives. Others fill the plane with normal humans.

It also depends greatly on the airline you are patronizing. Average Japanese adult weighs 139 pounds. Average American adult weighs 181 pounds.

JAL was flying/landing, so this was a “midair”.

Wow. You could tell me that everyone died in the tube of fire and I would believe you.

I assume Japanese Coast Guard? It wouldnt surprise me if our Coasties were there helping.

All of the headlines for this story are poorly written. “Japan Airlines A350 Safely Evacuated after Runway Collision” would just be too clear - and draw fewer eyeballs.

depends greatly on the airline

In my case, flying in CONUS that would be United, Delta, or (rarely) American. I haven't noticed much difference among them. I have zero experience with Southwest, JetBlue, Spirit.

In a related story, Southwest is giving obese people who self-identify as “superfat” a free seat if they ask. Can imagine being behind one of those folks as they try to squeeze out of an emergency exit and the plane is on fire?

I saw that ... putting someone in an exit row who requires two seats to accommodate her excess mass should be considered conspiracy to commit murder. I would be very unhappy to see that.

JAL was flying/landing, so this was a “midair”.

Quote from an NHK news report:

"The Japan Coast Guard says the JAL plane collided with one of its aircraft immediately after landing at around 6 P.M. on Tuesday."

"Immediately after landing" doesn't suggest a midair collision to me.

Are you crazy or just really really weird?

Either-or fallacy. You left off "not from around here."

“Title is incorrect. The collision occurred on the ground.”

This story has changed several times, due to poor journalism or confusing translation. The JAL had landed and as it was taxiing a wing delivered a glancing blow a either a waiting aircraft or another taxiing aircraft. I’m not sure if that’s a correct summary or not.

It is remarkable that no one was injured and that speaks very highly of the JAL flight crew who were obviously well-trained and immediately deployed egress slides. Japanese passengers were composed enough and quickly exited the aircraft in an orderly fashion.

There are a lot more fatties in the US.

There are some who in the US would try to save their carryon’s.

Given the fire was in the back, it would be interesting if they unloaded them first, and worked their way forward or got as many out as fast as possible.

It would also be interesting on how they handled the handicapped. Are they removed first or last or in order? IDK. If it takes 1 minute to remove a handicapped passenger, and 5 seconds to remove a regular passenger, what is the order? IDK.

After seeing more photos and videos of the JAL Airbus 350-900 wreck, I wonder if JAL was still partially in the air when it hit the smaller Dash 8. The nose of the 350 is smashed in and the nose gear and the right landing gear are missing.

Reporting is so sketchy these days.

“News” been reduced to only being fact, in a sense of the fact that something is ‘reported as’, yet..?

Japan is having a rough New Year, that much is true. ☹️
